"Tribal Bellydance Duo with Summer Sahar"

From a Review of the SF Ansuya showcase, 12/06

Summer of the Nekyia in tasteful tribal performed a charming solo with clever music and the accompaniment of a live drummer. Summer exposed a warm and friendly persona in her performance, which I often find missing from the tribal style. It is nice to see a dancer who connects with an audience, is playful, and isn’t afraid to smile, giggle and interact. I miss this energy when watching many tribal style dancers. Perhaps that is the poker face, the cold, solemn serious presence that many tribal or goth inspired dancers evoke as a perception while dancing, but it often puts a barrier between performer and crowd. Summer seemed confident, friendly and conversed smoothly with her drummer companion Scott Sterling (music guru for Nekyia), playing off the subtleties of rhythms and enhancing the low and high beats with appropriate body accents. Refreshing to see a drummer and dancer communicate for a change.

"Interview with Kristina Canizares"

RAm: You travel with your own drummer, Scott, can you tell us more about him?

Kristina: Scott is really more than a drummer. Before helping me start The Nekyia he played with many of the most innovative multi-media performance groups in San Francisco including Crash Worship, AWD, and Xeno. Now he has transitioned to Middle Eastern percussion, latin and jazz rhythms, and electronic composition. His music is beautiful, funky, exotic, and so much fun to dance to! He just released his first album, The Nekyia Vol.1, under the name Drumspyder. It is available from our website (www.thenekyia.org) and from his (www.drumspyder.com). I couldn't ask for a better creative partner.

Bio

Scott Sterling's drumming has fueled the flames of innovative dance and performance art in the San Francisco area for over twelve years -- often in a quite literal sense, given his involvement in pyrotechnic displays at Oakland's Crucible, Burning Man, and elsewhere. He was a founding member of AWD (1996-1999) and Xeno (2000-2005), influential pioneers of SF's currently thriving "indie-circus" movement. Within these ensembles Scott began as a drummer, but gradually took on the roles of composer and producer.
In 2003 he took up Middle Eastern percussion and immediately incorporated into into his work with Xeno, as well as collaborating with UltraGypsy and beginning to work with dancer/choreographer Kristina Canizares. Kristina founded the Nekyia dance ensemble and brought in Scott as music director in 2005. Together they forged a unique fusion of bellydance, jazz, Latin dance, burlesque and circus arts, with Scott producing original music for group and solo choreography.
His tracks and remixes now appear on several compilations of Arabic fusion dance music, with more scheduled for release in early 2009. Performing solo, accompanying the Nekyia, and working as a percussionist with Jef Stott (Six Degrees), Drumspyder has played up and down the west coast and has toured Japan and Canada.
He has participated in several of the highly original and successful Crucible theater productions, including "Dido and Aeneas" (2004), and "The Odyssey" (2007). He served as music director of the "Firebird" (2008), and was recently music director of "Dracul, Prince of Fire" (2009).
