Biography

Under The Influence With Drunk On Crutches' Debut Album

Los Angeles, CA: Jan. 2010 Let's face it, we don't need another record with some fragile singer hiding behind their scenester rules and lo-fi ethics. This is why Drunk On Crutches exists. Lead singer and songwriter Jennifer Whittenburg stepped into the legendary Hollywood recording studio, Grandmaster Recorders, Ltd. (Stevie Wonder to Tool, they've all been there) with producer/engineer Andrew Alekel (Foo Fighters, No Doubt) to record People. Places. Things. Joined by a close circle of friends that include drummer Kurt Bisquera (Whiskeytown, Tom Petty, Bonnie Raitt), keyboardist Rami Jaffe (Foo Fighters, Wallflowers), singer/songwriters Sally Jaye and Brian Wright, members of Matt Costa's band and more, Drunk On Crutches debut release is a celebration of rock and roll Americana.

Jennifer Whittenburg explains, "The songs came along while I was bouncing around between L.A., Atlanta and Nashville. I knew the songs were personal, but at the same time, I didn't want anything to sound too fancy or precious. I wanted to make a record that anyone can relate to, because those are the records I like to listen to." Determined not to be confined with the modern singer/songwriter formula, Whittenburg and Alekel approached the record with the intention of keeping a band feel, letting the players play to their strengths and let the songs speak in the best possible way. "If you look at bands like Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers and Ryan Adams and The Cardinals, clearly someone is in charge and writing the songs, but what the other guys bring to the table is undeniable," says Alekel.

Also included on People. Places Things. is a recording of a song written by one of Drunk On Crutches heroes, Neil Young. The song L.A. first appeared on the long out of print live LP, Time Fades Away. "We all love that song and it just fit the feel of the other songs so well. Kurt learned the song on the spot and we tracked it really fast and I feel we did it justice," says Whittenburg.

With the release of People. Places. Things., Drunk On Crutches will now be bringing the music to the masses. While playing shows around Los Angeles, including the famed Hotel Cafe in Hollywood, now they will be playing these songs to people around the country.

Lyrics

Using Me Up

Written By: Jennifer Whittenburg

it's 2:30 in the morning actually/ and i just got back from doing things not even worth mentioning/ spent all my money empty pockets too tired to dream/ used to be our dirty little secret now it's just dirty

L.A. won't you tell me how am i supposed to sleep/ with your bright lights and your sirens out screaming in the streets/ and everyone keeps telling me to pack it up and leave they say

this city is using me/ this city is using me/ this city is using me/ it's using me up

another day all dressed up in last night's clothes/ make your way back to wherever it is you call home/ it don't mean nothing if that's all you're looking for/ but something tells me that one day you'll be back for more

baby won't you tell me how could i ever sit still/ with that music and the whiskey and those fourteen dollar pills/ i call it salvation but you can call it what you will you say

this city is using me/ this city is using me/ this city is using me/ it's using me up

L.A. won't you tell me how am i supposed to sleep/ with your bright lights and your sirens out screaming in the streets/ and everyone keeps telling me to pack it up and leave they say

this city is using me/ this city is using me/ this city is using me/ it's using me up/ yeah it's using me up

Caroline (Go Back To Bed)

Written By: J. Whittenburg

the stars they keep falling/ just like this loose change/ I'm picking up the silver/ leave the pennies where they lay/ facedown on the pavement/ it's a small price to pay/ I need to believe in luck today

CHORUS
go back to bed Caroline/ instead of running around in the back of my mind/ are you looking for something/ what are you trying to find/ go back to be Caroline

they still talk about you/ I don't listen at all/ could what I remember still be who you are/ you never were too careful/ guess it could be your fault/ I'm juggling butcher knives and isopropyl alcohol

CHORUS

I should lay my head down and pray my soul to keep/ instead i'm walking back up to the belly of the beast/ gonna tap him on the shoulder/ see if he'll play with me/ he's going to help me keep you at bay Caroline

Chorus

Tupelo

Written By: Drunk On Crutches

V1:
We said a prayer on the sidewalk/ Walking along Broadway Street/ And I was pretty sure we meant it at the time even though we were still on our feet
V2:
When they call you come running/ Must have followed that trail of amphetamines/ Took the highway right up 'til the road ran out in the footsteps of some king/ Moving way too fast for this slow motion scene
CHORUS:
They say the streets of Tupelo always seem so empty/ When you leave whenever you're not home/ So instead of sitting around planning our escape why don't we all quit talking talking and go/ Let's just go
V3:
And aren't we just the perfect picture/ All dressed up like it's Halloween/ Another bad idea just waiting to go down and it smells like gasoline
V4:
We all stumbled through that alley/ Next to the hotel that makes all the noise/ I leaned you up against the wall to light your cigarette/ God bless this messed up boy/ He didn't stand a chance/ But he never really had a choice
REPEAT CHORUS
BRIDGE:
We're dancing all alone/ It's never too late for a little rock n' roll/ And the neighbors are banging on the walls/ But it just makes you laugh
REPEAT CHORUS
