"Interview with Mike Cann Of NORML"

How do you feel about the legalization of marijuana/ how does marijuana relate with your music?

I feel undoubtedly that marijuana is harmless and beneficial to those looking to expand their minds as well as discover complete relaxation and the simplicity of life. The legalization will also remove the stereotype of marijuana smokers i.e lazy, unmotivated, drug fiends, when in fact that is not true, and it can work as a tool to improve your life if you use it right. In regards to our music, marijuana helps us find our inner creativity and inspiration for writing and performing. We couldn't make music without it.

I've heard you've run into difficulties with the law in regards to marijuana?

Yes, yes we have. A few of us got pulled over in 2008 for running a red light and got our pipes confiscated on our way to a show in Worcester, Mass. We received but a slap on the wrist and a ticket for the red light. One of us also got caught with a joint at a state park once and had to go to court for it. Other than those occasions we've managed to be aware of our surroundings.

You're playing the 40 oz. to Freedom show, what are you looking forward to on that show?

This is going to be our first out of state show, as well as our biggest show to date. WWe also love Sublime and look forward to hearing how close they sound to the real thing. It is also a great cause and we couldn't ask for a better way to be a part of it.

How do you feel about medical marijuana?

Medical marijuana is an extraordinary and organic form of healing. Unlike factory produced pills and antibiotics, marijuana is real and gives patients the immediate relief and healing they need.

What are your influences and how would you describe your music?

We have many influences in regards reggae, dub, jazz, funk, hardcore, punk, rock, hip hop, and jam. Bands we love include Bob Marley of couse, The Scientist, Bad Brains, Lee Scratch Perry, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (look them up), Peter Tosh, 311, Mad Professor, Phish, Miles Davis, Pearl Jam, Toots and The Maytals, Wu Tang, Black Flag, 10ft Ganja Plant, Colin Of Arabia (look them up), Sublime, Grateful Dead, Incubus, and lots more.

The music we create is heavy set reggae with an edge. A lot of jamming, and a lot of experimenting. It isn't necessarily just reggae, it's just original music that grooves and sets a mood.

Where did the band name come from?

The name was made out of desperation. The Best was never used as a band name so we were going to do that. Of course, that's a little cocky, and we are a dub band, so why not Dubbest? Pronounced (Dub-best)

Have you ever been to a Boston Freedom Rally and what did you think of the event?

A few of us in the band, attended a year ago. A good time and a good cause that no marijuana smoker can deny. It is a well planned organization that is changing the marijuana culture as we live it.

Have you noticed any changes in people's behavior since MA passed marijuana decrim?

A lot of people smoke marijuana more freely and openly. Police officers are more laid back and less uptight about the subject. It is very comforting to know it doesn't have the big ugly illegal stamp on it.

What are your longer term goals/plans for your music and what do you have upcoming?

Hopefully to become international, tour the entire world, smoke exotic strains of ganja, and to put out records. Our immediate goals include working with the Scientist on a dub album of sorts, and we also plan to get some merchandising as well as perhaps a sponsorship with a vaporizor company. We are also planning to begin label hunting very soon, so labels look out for Dubbest! - Mike Cann/ Dubbest

Bio

All the members of Dubbest have been close friends, at least since high school. We had all switched off roles in many bands together, and finally in February 2009, we came together to form a dub reggae group, which we had all been anticipating. Our musical roots in punk and hardcore helps us to channel a high energy feeling, while retaining the easy-going attitude found in reggae. Behind all of that, we have gained infinite influence from all kinds of music, from jazz, classical, bluegrass and blues, to trance, rock, funk and jam bands. Myspace.com/dubbestreggae
