"Dubfunk - Mandala Review"

I have been following Dubfunk since his last release on Global Underground. His engineering values are something that should be picked up on by all producers, and similar to the likes of Deadmau5, or Elite Force. Dubfunk runs his own Dynami Label, as well as producing for Global Underground, and Mashtronic Records. His sounds are fresh, and very 2009 friendly, which is why many DJ's like John Digweed, and Laurent Garnier support his music.
Techy hypnotic grooves interspersed with building melodies and driving percussion are the bones to the originals, and will be satisfying to any listeners ears. Guy J brings a raw dirty techno belter, and is perfect for mid set dance floor that are packed, much along the lines of Guy J's previous releases on Bedrock, and Turbo. Patch Park who have had resent releases on the legendary Little Mountain, and Max Graham's Re*Brand imprint bring even more respect to their production name. Definitely a choice remix, the Park remix is definitely going to create spin off genre's from Dubfunk's ideas.
All in all, Mandala is a well balanced release, and should be considered one of 2008's anthems. Highlighting a new name in dance are the quality remixes, which should leave buyers feeling like their money was well spent.

"Dubfunk - Cruel Review"

In a day and age when dance music, and, electronica in general is searching for an identity, one constant remains the same: great artists that push the envelope of sound and production will always find their way. I recently had a discussion with one of my industry friends, and we talked about what it takes to make great music. In order for a DJ to make it in today's highly competitive market, he or she must produce his or her own tracks. It is not enough to just be able to beat match. This does not mean however that all great DJ's are good producers, or the reverse; that all great producers are good DJ's.
What we find with this release by Dubfunk is a sound that seems to be emerging from the popularity of minimal house. I like to call it progressive electro minimal house music. Success of a 12 inch release is also proportionate to the radio airplay it receives, both digitally and commercially. Furthermore, the popularity and longevity of the record's lifespan is related to the period of which the globetrotting superstars keep it in their CD case. Since this new and exciting genre seems to be emerging from the ashes of big electro stabbing synths, artist's like Hernan Cattaneo, Deep Dish, and Sander Kleinenberg, all of which are pioneering this new sound, will eat this track up. It is a refreshing change from the redundant structure of the so called “big sound” so popular right now. Dubfunk Cruel Mix is a well produced and adequate track that should have no problem finding the dance-floors worldwide. It has a nicely programmed keyboard progression, and it is well placed enough to where it does not dominate the whole track.
"Dubfunk Cruel Mix is a well produced and adequate track that should have no problem finding the dance-floors worldwide."
The Original Mix has a more progressive feel to it. The synths are not as dominant as in the Cruel Mix. This will probably be more appropriate for late our clubbers or a Bridge track to start building the energy of a set again. The production is what makes this record workable on the dance floor. The main draw back with it is that it is very repetitive and the two mixes have little variance. Don't get me wrong. They are good tracks. They just lack differentiation to the untrained ear. I would have probably included a Dub, or something with a haunting vocal to go with the original mix; something to change it up.
Overall I found this record to be pleasant to listen to and write about. It did not bring me out of my chair, but it was produced well enough to garner attention and suggest it to DJ's worldwide who are familiar with this hot new emerging sound. Solid release.

Talented Dj & Producer “Dubfunk” keeps heading further ahead in his solid career steps with no limits or barriers.

Recently signing his latest single “Dubfunk – Is This L.A” to Global Underground, going out on the label’s acclaimed compilation GUMIXED:2 Limited edition.

Talented Dj & Producer “Dubfunk” keeps heading further ahead in his solid career steps with no limits or barriers, being recently one of names who’s getting positive acclaims as a dj, remixer & producer, recognized by his unique sound between artists & clubbers from around the globe, with his debut only released January 07, followed by “Cruel” on Mashtronic Records, “Tiran” & “Twisted Minds” on his own label Dyami Records.

Recently signing his latest single “Dubfunk – Is This L.A” to Global Underground, going out on the label’s acclaimed compilation GUMIXED:2 Limited edition.

We catch up with him to discover more about him, his sound & what’s behind the scenes for the coming period.

-First of all, who are you?

I’m just a simple person who is totally in love with music in general & EDM in particular…….

-You’ve cut such a long way in such a short period of time, how it all started for you with production?

It all started back in December 2006, during an after hour following my gig in Buenos Aires, it was hazy gray & raining, this is where I actually felt so inspried to start my production career.

-So, what was your musical inspiration before that?

I’ve always been inspired during my teenage period by rock music, the likes of Led Zepplin, Nirvana, Nina Simone, The Doors, Depeche Mode & loads others to mention had a big influence on me.

Electronically was Faithless, Underworld & specially Sasha & Digweed “Northern Exposure” back in 1997, which I consider one of the best eras in EDM.

-How you describe the sounds of your production?

As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve always been into rock music, which in a way got me to discover the very deep side of me, my sounds just represent this particular side, my inner state mostly take control of what I’m producing & playing.

-What is the secret behind getting so far into the road of success?

Simply hard working & totally being myself, I just go ahead creating my own new sound totally driven by my own mood.

And by the way, I still got loads to do before I can call it success.

-What’s your favourite of your own tracks?

Actually each one of them does have a certain flavour to me, but I consider “Is this L.A?”, “Alive” & “Penetration” my most favourite.

-What’s your favourite of your tracks of the other producers?

That’s really a hard one to answer, there’s so much nice stuff out there, but recently I had “Daniela Stickroth - Chest in the Attic (Original Mix)” which I really fell in love with.

-Who’s your favorite producers at the moment?

There’s loads of great producers out there now after the digital revolution, Jim Rivers, Roland Kleinenberg, Solaris Heights, Gui Borrato, Robert Babicz, Martin Buttrich, Christian Fischer are some of the names I record at the moment.

-So, what’s next in your plans?

At the moment I have my single “Is This L.A” going out on GUMIXED: 2 Limited Edition on 3rd Septmeber, then by mid October will have a 2X release including “Penetration” & “Alive” which have had an early support by artists such as Hernan Cattaneo & John Aquaviva. - beatportal.com

Bio

Dubfunk is a growing DJ / producer taking further solid steps in his musical experiment. His developing artistic maturity is bringing a groove blending different genres known for their simplicity and tweaked structures: techy minimal beats with an underlying progressive theme. Dubfunk has always been a fellow follower of music. As a teen he had already reached a revelation for music thanks to many great artists such as Led Zeppelin, The Doors or Nina Simone only to mention a few. As he took on a music engineer career, he spent eight years developing music’s technical side. During this time he discovered Electronic Dance Music, finding a true passionate calling whilst listening to Northern Exposure and Global Underground compiles. This forged his interest in learning the techniques of djing and producing, seemingly the best way to create a fusion of many different musical cultures. 2002 kicked in with his first professional experiences as a DJ; he started playing in his co-owned venue in Cairo to later become a resident of Sharm El Sheikh’s Pacha where he caught attention from big named artists. Thanks to this recognition, in 2005 he decided to move to Switzerland and set up his proper studio. He concentrated on starting a new self experiment in producing his own musical elements. The following two years gratified this personal investment by gigs in Europe, South America and Egypt; giving him the reputation of a solid dj. Both South American tours in 2006 and 2007 were a genuine experience for him, as it provided a great source of influence and inspiration for his music – aiming him to deliver his own sounds rather then exterior releases. This led to the beginning of a producing frenzy; Dubfunk opened his own label “Dyami” in which he released his two first tracks, Alive and Tiran and got his third track “Cruel” released on Mashtronics Records. As his productions hit charts and received support from major artists such as…. Hernan Cattaneo, Laurant Garnier, Nick Warren & Dave Seaman, it is no coincidence that he is now a prominent figure of Global Underground. GU has trusted him with the elaboration of 3 compiles and has effectively given him a strong turning point in his career as his original productions and remixes reached n°1 charts. 2008 is another step forward as the year begins with “Mandala”, released on Dave Seaman’s label “Audio Therapy”. If asked about his experience so far, he comments; “The releases I produce are never planned or written down, everything depends on my mood, feelings and own experiences. I just truly enjoy sitting in my studio and flowing with music for hours and as a result producing intimate tracks to appeal my constant obsession over music.”
