"Dubmarine proved why they are Brisbane's dub-platter kings"

On Thursday night, Dubmarine proved why they are Brisbane's dub-platter kings. The band opened with a couple of tracks from their pending debut album Depth Of Sound, and while these early offerings were met with indifference, it wasn't long before the 'Dub Sub' cranked up the volume and had everyone from hard core punks to indie kids trying out two-step. - Arts Queensland - Nov 2010

"New EP by Dubmarine"

Brisbane reggae group Dubmarine are well known to their loyal fans, having played at festivals and events like Parklife, The Brisbane Festival, The Dreaming Festival and most recently Woodford.
On the back of their first EP Dub From The Deep comes the next effort, Chip, which features 5 original songs.
The title track is a cool dub hip hop hybrid, with big fat doses of twisted electronic bass, while the second track Inspiration Drive was my favourite with its trippy intro that builds into a rich dub track punctuated by some great horn licks.
Boom features Brisbane rapper Emcyte and has a strong hip hop influence with the Dubmarine crew adding their dub interpretation. Dots and Lines is another standout, it draws on the indigenous roots and culture within the band and has some really cool Aboriginal vocals at the beginning of the track.
The last one, Pass it On , is pure party drum and bass with a killer bassline and ragga vocals to match.
The guys (and girls!) tell me they have album coming out in a few months, so look out for a review and an interview.

""There were a number of stand-out performances of the night, although the definite highlight of this was Dubmarine’s high ending to the evening""

Last night’s Q Music Awards was something of a spectacle. In a mixture of good vibes, loud talking and some very interesting live performances were certainly present.

With awards going to all usual suspects such as Yves Klein Blue and Hungry Kids of Hungary, a lifetime achievement award to Carol Lloyd, the Published Song going to Dave McCormack, and a whole host of other achievements, the highlight was definitely seeing the underdogs My Fiction take the cake for the People’s Choice award.

There were a number of stand-out performances of the night, although the definite highlight of this was Dubmarine’s high ending to the evening. Other notable mentions go to 26, Mexico City, Carol Lloyd, Kev Carmody and Yves Klein Blue for their fine performances on the night. - Q Music Awards Ceremony 2010 by News Unlimited

"Nine piece Brisbane band Dubmarine are F?#king Phat!"

Nine piece Brisbane band Dubmarine are f@#king phat!
Blending funk, hip hop, dub, reggae in a way that is deep, catchy hooked and makes you want to groove. Very cool indeed. This is a band that I'll be looking out for in the future. Also one of the few bands that our photographer Ellie and I have totally agreed on.

"In The Mix"

"...one of Brisbane’s best homegrown Dub and Reggae bands, D-Kaz Man was giving it his all on the mic, stirring the passing crowd into bouncing along to tracks including their infectiously Eastern inspired track Singie and finishing up with the funky Dancehall beats of Pass It On." - Sep 2009

"By the time Dubmarine take to the stage just after 11pm, a loyal following of fans have accumulated on the dance floor to get a taste of the dubalicious reggae sounds of this vibrant band. The passionate vocalist has an incredible range of ability that had him doing a Prince-like falsetto on Got it Right Here to mimicking the sounds of a didgeridoo to create the indigenous feel during the instrumental breaks of Inspiration Drive. This is toe-tapping funky, sexy dub at its’ finest. Dubmarine deliver a well-tuned, highly-polished set of an ensemble that really knows its’stuff. The vibe in the Moon Bar was definitely uplifted and laid-back with appreciation shown by those drawn to the dance floor by the seductive, smooth sounds." 2007 - inthemix.com.au

"Parklife 2009"

"As their name suggests, they’re into dub, but appeal to the electro Parklife punters by amping up their set a little. MC Kaz Man is a good hype man. He’s constantly strutting up and down the stage, despite the intense heat, working the crowd with his fast lyrics. His voice is very distinct, with a reggae rapping influence." - Faster Louder

"Racecourse Rd Festival"

"After walking the length of the street to check everything out, I was drawn back down towards the river end by some enticing and very cool dub reggae.
As I soon found out, the band was called Dubmarine and they had an awesome four-piece horn section, a bassist, drummer, an energetic MC who didn’t mind jumping off the stage to mingle with the crowd, and a guy I am sure I have seen twiddle knobs for another Brisbane band.
They had a great sound and were perfect for 2pm on a Sunday afternoon. They played a 45 minute set, with the last song a killer drum’n’bass track that left the crowd and I wanting more! The guys announced they have a single coming out in November, so stay tuned I will try to get my hands on a early copy for a review. " - Courier Mail Dotcom

"" Dubmarine charged the crowd with their high energy, genre crossing show... ""

As the sun began to disappear, Dubmarine took to the stage blasting the crowd with their high energy, genre crossing show. Kazman charged the crowd with “Point the Bone” As versatile as ever, the band powered through grimey dubstep, drum n bass, swinging horns and a distinct old school hip hop flavour. They Left the punters sweaty and ready for the bright eyed night. - West End Carnivale - Scene Magazine - 20 May 2010

"Local drum & bass mob of nine Dubmarine are squashed onto the Carnivalé stage to deliver a sonic freak-out of dancehall with a healthy dose of shrieking brass. Lead vocalist D Kazman’s range is nothing short of epic – I’m talking sweet Katchafire-like mel"

Local drum & bass mob of nine Dubmarine are squashed onto the Carnivalé stage to deliver a sonic freak-out of dancehall with a healthy dose of shrieking brass. Lead vocalist D Kazman’s range is nothing short of epic – I’m talking sweet Katchafire-like melodics one second and a weird electronic drone the next – and his enunciation reminds me of Sean Paul - West End Carnivale - Rave Magazine - May 2010

"Big year predicted for Dubmarine - "one of the best bands and live acts in Australia.""

FUSING reggae, hip hop, dub, and dancehall, Dubmarine has emerged as one of the best bands and live acts in Australia.

Still, being nominated for best band at the 2009 Deadly Awards (the annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander achievement awards) was a great surprise according to singer Kat Walker.

“To be there with Kaz, founder of the band and all the other indigenous artists was amazing,” Kat says. “Considering we didn’t have a single or album to push in 2009, it was quite remarkable to be recognised and it makes for a very exciting 2010. We will have a new album – Depth of Sound– out in March and this gives us a chance to really push the new product.”

Dubmarine has been navigating Australian shores since 2006 but the crew and sounds have significantly intensified since the initial launch.

“Dubmarine has come a long way from the initial five-piece acoustic band to be a syncy, boomy nine-piece with a massive sound,” Walker said. “The journey has been a slurper effect and the more it swelled, the more it has gelled.”

Walker, an aspiring lawyer who volunteers at the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service, is the only female on Dubmarine’s deck.

She believes every vessel needs a woman and thinks they relate a lot better to the band with female representation.

“The music scene is such a boy’s club, but don’t tell the boys I said that,” Walker pleads.

This North Coast tour is to promote the release of the new single Chip, which is already on high rotation nationally. Chip humorously delves into the way people’s freedom is eroding and suggests that the day when we are all micro-chipped is not far away.

“Our mission from the deep Dub-submarine is to destroy Babylon from below and free the people from the oppression,” says Walker.

Free the people to dance, that is, and Captain D-Kazman and his crew do just that. Helmsmen D-Kazman, according to Walker, ‘is the magic behind the mythology, rhymes and melodies and shares his thirty-six years of life and dance.

"He loves controlling the different rhythms and believes the best way to get the message across is to do it subtly and through the energy the band creates.”

This is hard to argue with, as the band can have as many as three drummers on stage.

“It’s all about the boom,” says Walker. “Having two trombones drives the band. The mixing of old classical instruments with the new digitisation of synthesisers mixes really well.”

“Fitting nine people on a small stage can be quite cosy and Kaz and I love to dance and move about but we haven’t taken any of the band out yet.”

"Chip Single Review"

...The next three songs are live and give an idea of the high energy set that the group churns out on the stage. The live songs bring their deep grooves to life with the addition of female vocalist Cat Walker who seems to be missing on the studio tracks. Not to mention D-Kazman’s on stage improvisations, where he is comfortable working the crowd into a frenzy.

This is the sort of music that needs a stage. With two trombonists, two percussionists, guitars, synths and attractive vocalists, aesthetically it is pleasing to the eye.

Of course the ears like it as well, but it translates much better to where it can exude the positive energy to the people. Festivals and bars receive the atmosphere a lot easier than your bedroom. But, if you’re already a fan it won’t make a difference.

This EP is just a taste. It’s a glimpse at what Dubmarine is capable of. It’s a resource for people wanting to know more about a scene that is currently booming - dub/reggae in Brisbane. - thedwarf.com.au
