Duck and Swallow

Duck and Swallow

BandPop

Tragicomic lyrics that roll around the complexities of life with playful, plunky melodies and straightforward, evocative vocals. Together they make delicate melodies that stick to your brains and make you feel relatable.

Biography

Duck and Swallow is the new solo project of Lillie Jayne, a Brooklyn performer and composer. Stripping away the density and metal noise of her previous band, Drayton Sawyer Gang, Lillie Jayne phoenixes her way to a point of clean light with Duck and Swallow in an expression of simple honesty in melody. Her lyrics, a mix of raw truth and personal plaintiveness, are interwoven with commentary on the vastness and absurdity of the universe; these thoughts are expressed through tangled poetry and brightly haunting melodies that are simultaneously simple and complex. Drawing on her experiences and influences in theater, early punk, jazz, cabaret, and pop, she seemingly tosses chunks of these aside, keeping only delicate scraps which she quilts together into a tapestry of personal love letters and anecdotes of intro- and outro-spective poetry. Having performed in a diverse range of disciplines since her childhood, she engages the audience comfortably and openly, as if each performance is a rendesvous in the back of a bar with an old flame. Drink to drink, confessions are laid bare and laughs are had: some surreal, some thrilling, but all wrapped in the warm lining of melancholy longing for something thay may never have even existed.

Although merely in its infant stages, Duck and Swallow has already found fans, admirers, and a warm buzz in the northeast and on the internet. Duck and Swallow has played throughout the northeast US and plays often at home in NYC. Look for upcoming shows in Montreal, Burlington, Boston, Philadelphia, and a UK tour in the spring.

Consumer Advocacy

Written By: Lillie Jayne

Drive, drive, drive to your death.
Stroke, stroke, stroke your ego until your last breath.

Take, take, take all you can until you can't.
Waste, waste, waste what you've got 'til it's not a nice place to be
Then wallow in false memory.

Blame, Blame, Blame it on everyone else.
Don't you feel one iota of culpability
Or any personal responsibility.

Hate, hate, hate what you fear might be better.
Stay this way and then say it's too late and then
Freak the fuck out because you find you don't like anything
Cauterize your insides and obsess over petty things
Lose your life to years of watching television.

I don't wanna be modern
I don't wanna be modern
I don't wanna be modern if this is what it is.

Our Gang (Lady Of The Flies)

Written By: Lillie Jayne

You do not believe a thing that I have seen
And yet you see me
And I see you

And you do not believe a thing that I have done
Why would I lie to you
When I hate lying?

It's simple, really.

You were there
And you were there
And you and you and you but let's be fair
I was there, too

And I was wrong and you were right because I hate to fight but let's be fair
I was right, too

And oh, how I hated you.
And oh, you hated me too.
Oh, what are we silly monkeys to do?

It was so confusing, we were so young
And all we could do was keep breathing
In and out and in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out and in and out and in.

The atmosphere was seething, speaking in tongues
And all we could do was keep bleeding ourselves
Cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT CUT IT OUT
Cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out
Cut it out cut it out cut it out cut it out,
Cut it out.

And oh, we were funny and fair.
And oh, we were bloody unfair.
And oh, we could tear the world apart if we wanted to, and stitch it back together in a form that fit us, and made us happier, and this is what we did.
At least I hope so.
At least I like to think so.

When I was in high school I saw this movie, a girl could talk to insects, they were her only friends

And in the best scene of the entire movie
She calls on the bugs to support her and they covered the whole dormitory
And this is what she said to them
This is what she said to the bugs as the crowd was closing in:

"I love you, I love you all
I love you, I love you all, I love you
I love you, I love you, I love you all.

I love you, I love you all, I love you, I love you all, I love you, I love you all, I love you."

I love you, I love you all.
I love you, I love you all,
I love you.

Murder Herder

Written By: Lillie Jayne

You didn't notice that I had killed you
You wiped your brow and asked me how I was doing
I told you I was fine and in your mind you wondered why my expression looked like I had just seen a ghost.

While seven brothers of seven brides sidled by
And tried to vy for all of my affections
I was climbing low and high as though I might find your apparition in another dimension.

I emptied all my bags and all my pockets, filling them with cotton and redemption
So that I might give my travels more attention.

The cotton rotted and it made me hot and I found myself on a mountain shelf, feeling like hell and stripped as well down to my barest skin
And I could not try, try that I might to begin to justify the awkward plight that I in fright now found myself in.

And I am a murderer, and I am a thief.
I won't kill you once, I'm not that nice I'll kill you twice and keep the pistol cocked.
I'm rocked and locked and fucked in a stupid place, with stupid faces staring at me with no trace of irony.

And my soul is split a thousand times, so intricately the cells divide and develop into fractals of emotion.

And with each division, I look at myself with more and more derision, moving further from a coherent decision, with my vision permanently blurred.

You didn't notice that I had killed you.
You wiped your brow and asked me how I was doing.

Lullabye-bye

Written By: Lillie Jayne

It's okay to wanna die.
It's all right
It's all right, my baby bye
If sometimes you feel like you wanna die.

It's okay to wanna lie
In your bed and play dead, my baby bye
If sometimes you feel like
You can't take it any more

It's okay to wanna keep
Yourself all to yourself, my baby bye
If sometimes you can't try
To fake it anymore

It's okay to wanna die
It's all right, it's all right
When you're up late at night
Eyes open in the dark
Not a light, not a spark to make you wanna keep going.

It's okay to wanna die.
It's okay to wanna die.

The Song In Which I Call You An Asshole

Written By: Lillie Jayne

One day I will write you a song
One day I will write you a song that says everything
That says everything that I cannot explain

And everything I could never say to your face
I will attempt to express that full feeling I get
Looking at the freckles on your skin
How my body releases endorphins
Even if I see your first name
Written on a page
Or on a sign
Or spoken.

I will also sing about
How inexplicable it is
That sometimes I think that you're a complete asshole to me and how I know that when you hear me sing that part of the song where I just called you an asshole, you will immediately think, "You too. You're an asshole, too."

Which is why I hate you so much
And why I love you so much
Why I something so much
Why we anything so much
Why it is nonsense
And it is nonesuch
That we should feel
So out of touch
With the reality of what it is to be us.

If I didn't love you so fucking much I would never want to see you again.
