"Three Must-See Acts This Week"

Infusing his vivid lyricism with subtle humor and hints of pop-culture awareness, E.G. Phillips is a rising singer-songwriter set to release his sophomore album, At Home At Sea, in July. The local musician attributes his wide-ranging creative influences to Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, and Tom Lehrer, which set the stage for Phillips’ singular songwriting technique and knack for unconventional instrumentation. An active presence within the Bay Area’s independent music scene, Phillips’ shining personality enabled him to create E.G. Phest, an annual event that spotlights local singer-songwriters in addition to Phillips’ own material. In early 2017, he released his excellent debut album, Fish from the Sky, a whimsical and warm-hearted collection of songs that emphasizes Phillips’ natural songwriting talent. Phillips’ upcoming album, At Home At Sea, promises more of the cinematic lyricism that the musician excels at in his previous work, with more pronounced jazz influences. - SF Weekly

"PREMIERE: E.G. Phillips Releases “Your Inexorable Pull”"

E.G. Phillips has been making some waves for the past few years, and as a non-stopping force he’s returning with another gem in the form of “Your Inexorable Pull,” a track that showcases the most raw and intimate side of the artist as he pours his heart, armed only with his guitar.

At Home At Sea features some of Phillips’ most compellingly original, slyly humorous, and sneakily affecting work to date. Blending influences ranging from The Decemberists and Bob Dylan to Miles Davis and Tom Lehrer, Phillips’ brand of indie-folk is delightfully off-kilter, fleshed-out with atypical instrumentation and his agile lyricism. - Vents Magazine

"A triple-threat bill of songwriters enchant Neck of the Woods on Thursday"

E.G. Phillips' playfully named Ducks with Pants brings both wit and whimsy to the stage. The singer-songwriter will be presenting his set with a full band this time around and, much like his song "Settin' my own pace", Ducks With Pants march to their own delightful drum. - The Bay Bridged

"E.G. Phillips' "Fish from the Sky" is lighthearted, lovable pop"

When listening to the debut full-length LP Fish from the Sky from San Francisco-based E.G. Phillips, also known as Ducks With Pants, the first words that come to mind are ‘whimsical’ and ‘charming.’ The words ‘incredibly good’ also slip into the mix. Compiled of ten short tracks that blend quirky singer-songwriter pop with folk sensibilities, the album is Phillips’ “motley collection” of tracks he’s put together while living in the Bay and “haunting the various open mic venues in coffee houses and bars that the city makes available.” The opening track, “Tall Girls In Love” (streaming below) is the perfect example of what makes Phillips project so accessible. Apparently inspired by an episode of "Leave It To Beaver," the tongue-in-cheek lyrics absolutely refuse to take themselves too seriously (“the boys are intimidated / they hafta look up to see her eyes”), while the stripped down arrangements bring a certain intimacy one could only attain in the type of open mic night that Phillips describes. He will be next performing at Neck of the Woods on February 15th. - Lilly Milman - The deli SF

Bio

E.G. Phillips is a San Francisco based songwriter who creates lyric driven songs with his own special blend of whimsy and cinematic imagery which he uses to give a wry take on dealing with the longings of the heart and the madness of existence.  In possession of a degree in Geography, he comes from a country called the Midwest and his favorites include Bob Dylan and The Kinks as well as Duke Ellington...and that crowd.  When it comes to his stage presence, there's a touch of satirist Tom Lehrer in the mix.   As for the inspiration for his lyrics, he readily admits an unusually outsized influence by long running British sci-fi show "Doctor Who."

"Ducks With Pants" is the name of his fake band.

E.G. has been heavily involved in the local Bay Area music community.  Aside from being a fixture on the open mic circuit, he was the "Songwriter-in-Residence" at Bazaar Cafe (September 2015 and April 2017) and has played gigs at San Francisco venues such as the Hotel Utah,  Neck of the WoodsPianoFight and the Lost Church.  He's been the organizing force behind ensemble events such as tributes to Bob Dylan and Tom Lehrer,  a regular attendee at the San Francisco chapter of Balanced Breakfast (in September 2018 he featured in the inaugural "Balanced BreakFEST" — playing a set at Revolution Cafe), a participant in "Local Vocals" (performing weekly at the Hotel Carlton), and he has volunteered for the Bread and Roses charity organization.

Across the Bay, Phillips has played shows at the Monkey House in Berkeley and the Oakland Octopus.  Further afield, he's played the Mint in Los Angeles as part of his Spring '18 tour and been a guest performer in Steve Key's "Songwriters at Play" in San Luis Obispo.   He's also  played The Bowery Vault in Nashville as well as Sam's Jams at Bobby's Idle Hour.    In 2019, E.G. played a showcase at the Jackalope in Austin for SxSW.

In August of 2016, Phillips hosted the first "E.G. Phest," inviting various local singer/songwriters to cover his songs for his birthday celebration at Bazaar Cafe.   A splendid time was had by all.  Participants of that show have continued to perform the songs they played that evening, one even going on the record his version for his debut EP.  In 2017, lightning struck again and E.G. Phest II rocked the Lost Church with another diverse collection of Bay Area musicians, each giving one of his songs their own distinct spin -- whether it be rock, soul, Bossa Nova or Americana.  In 2018, EGPhest was hosted at the Hotel Utah where a total of fifteen acts played E.G. Phillips tunes for the phest's third incarnation.  More  than just a birthday party, E.G. Phest celebrates the local music community as well as the art of the song and the craft of performance.

In early 2017 Phillips released his first album "Fish from the Sky"  — a collection of well worn originals he's performed around the Bay Area for many years.

In 2018 Phillips released a cover of one his songs by fellow San Francisco indie artist Samantha Margret — " Sunday is Made for Loving"  — and two new originals  — "The L.A. Song"  and "Lady of the Shadows."

A new full album entitled "At Home At Sea" will be released in July 2019.
