dugout is jazz melded with bluegrass, infused with rock, peppered with jam band improvisation, tempered with solid musical sensibilities

Biography

At the heart of dugout’s lineup is the relationship between front man Jon Piper and lead
guitarist Jeff Benford. The two met in 1995 in Northern Virginia and formed an immediate
and lasting musical bond. Through the years, Jon and Jeff managed to keep their musical
connection alive, despite both moving away from the sprawling suburban nightmare that is
Northern Virginia, getting together occasionally to jam and record, until they both ended up
in Richmond in March 2005. And thus, the seeds of dugout were sown.
Bassist Sam Giacco joined dugout in the spring of 2006 when, just minutes after posting
an ad on Craigslist looking for a band, he received a response from Piper who explained that
he was just about to post an ad for a bass player of his description. Not one to argue with
serendipity, Sam joined up immediately. The third piece of the dugout puzzle was in place.
Throughout the rest of the year the band worked tirelessly to find the perfect drummer before
realizing it would take two to make the thing go right. Drummer Mark “Fundog” Henderson
and percussionist Jim Noonan joined the team. Shortly keyboardist Joe Kennebeck was added and dugout was ready to take the field!
dugout takes a collaborative approach to their music combining the talents and tastes
of each member with a fresh look at musical styles — jazz melded with bluegrass,
infused with rock, peppered with jam band improvisation, tempered with solid musical
sensibilities — to create a soulful sound steeped in Americana.

Lyrics

Sailor Sam

Written By: Benford, Piper

It’s been a long time since I met you
Been a long time since I seen your face
But if your willing then I bet you
Nobody ever won the race

I was already down
Take me for I met you
Like a first-class clown
The way I ended up having to invent you

Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam he’s on his way down home
Down the river where he makes his place
Sailor Sam was headed all the way on down the road
There goes, watch him waving his hand.

Singing goodbye
Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam, my friend
Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam
Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam, my friend
Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam

Just ‘cause I don’t always - make sense - don’t mean I’m crazy
Sometimes I just like to sit around
Like to see my soul when it’s floating – all day lazy - Lord
Give me time - little bit of time - figure out what’s going down

I don’t always – call out your name no more
I don’t always stop and think twice
Lately if I’ve been giving – two thoughts to anything
It was your one last piece – of advice
You gave me one last piece – of advice
Remember that flower – it’s got a seed
Remember the hour – you were in need
That’s when I came to you in a dream
And opened up your eyes

I gave that flower to good old Sam
So that he could watch it grow
Sam took off on down the road again
What happened to the flower – nobody knows-nobody knows

Won’t you wave goodbye
Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam, my friend come on and wave goodbye
Wave goodbye to Sailor Sam
