Dukes & Gannon

BandAmericanaRock

Dukes & Gannon take songs seriously, as their heroes did, crafting songs of love and loss to make you smile through your tears. Throwaway lines and half-baked sentiments won't cut it when you're trying to live up to the standards set by giants like Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, and the Rolling Stones.

Biography

Los Angeles-based songwriting partners Dukes & Gannon have been crafting their sound for the last ten years, and actively navigating the live circuit as a four and five-piece band since spring 2003. The Gunpowder Waltz (produced by Ian Dukes) is an independently released effort launched in the summer of 2004. The disc is packed tightly with eleven songs about relationships, men, women, love, and relationships that clocks in just above a half hour and rekindles the torch brightly lit by great American artists like Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson.

To help pay the bills and fund their main endeavor, Andrew Gannon and Ian Dukes have composed original music for New Line Cinema's "Rush Hour 2" and "Blow" official movie web sites, as well as for the A&E Biography shows, "Dr. Seuss," "Georgia O'Keefe," "Patty Duke" and "Jack London." The Dukes & Gannon EP Six Shooter (2000) was the first release by music mogul Al Teller's online record label initiative, Atomic Pop, just in time for the dot com Internet implosion to claim D&G as unwitting victims in the fallout. No matter, though, as The Gunpowder Waltz is leaps and bounds above its predecessor in terms of vision and execution, and goes to show that as the old heroes of American songwriting pass away, younger musicans must rise to fill their places.

They Cry Bigger Tears In Texas

Written By: Andrew Gannon and Ian Dukes

They cry bigger tears in Texas, like rain fallin' on my shoes,
So much more to love, means so much more to lose,
Since you left me there, I got them giant Texas blues

Texas has a generous sky, with a billion stars all around,
But this lone star wants to die,
Bury me in that generous Texas ground

They cry bigger tears in Texas, to fill up all that empty space,
And though my lonely heart gets restless, I can't keep away from that place

Coming in to Houston, right out of New Orleans,
I found a bigger world to walk in, and a bigger place to dream,
But if you've ever been to Texas, you know exactly what that means
That just means bigger disappointment, when you don't find anything

They cry bigger tears in Texas, to fill up all that empty space,
And though my lonely heart gets restless, I can't keep away from that place

To save my peace of mind, I headed North for a while,
But I was hard pressed to find anything to make me smile,
So I headed on back down there to the place I belong,
Though it always seems to steer me wrong

So I cry bigger tears in Texas, to fill up all my empty space,
And when my lonely heart gets restless, the tears fall like rain,
all down my face,
But I can't keep away from that place

Hard To Say Goodbye

Written By: Andrew Gannon and Ian Dukes

A road without a rider, a track without a train,
I feel like a paper that's been left out in the rain
Can you feel my pain, like I can read your mind?
Ain't it hard to say goodbye after all this time?

Your smile is so hollow, it's easy to trace
Tears that you swallow are tears I can taste
I believe I know your face better than I know mine
It makes it hard to say goodbye after all this time

Just wait a minute before you walk away
I just want to hold you, 'cause there's nothing left to say
But believe me, every day, I'll be walking the line
Ain't it hard to say goodbye after all this time

If I Was Loving You

Written By: Andrew Gannon and Ian Dukes

I've played it through my mind a thousand times before and it always seems so easy,
But when I'm standing next to you, I can only stammer like a fool,

If I could only find a way to get my message through,
I'd make every word ring true from every love song that you ever knew,
If I was loving you

I can't tell you all the nights I've lied awake and planned exactly what I'd say,
But when I try to speak, my voice gets weak, and all my words just fade away,

I sure would be delighted if you shared my point of view,
The world would be your garden, 'cause I'd give you every rose that ever grew,
If I was loving you

I've been kickin' my own ass upside down for acting like a fool when you're around,
but you drive me crazy,
And there ain't no room for pride when I'm all swelled up inside, my heart is blazin'

If a minute was an hour and an hour was a day,
I still would not have time to tell you all the sweet things that I want to say,
If I was loving you

Heavy Handed

Written By: Andrew Gannon and Ian Dukes

Heavy handed,
Jackhammer, tactless, but you know the fact is,
Darlin' you know where I stand
And I'd never leave you stranded

Clumsy, bold and couthless,
But darlin' I ain't cold or ruthless
You need never second guess,
If there's love behind my kiss

I ain't subtle, I ain't no mystery
My love ain't gentle, but you can count on me,
To find you in the dark
If I have to tear the night apart

Heavy handed
Well I guess that's how I'm branded

The kind of love you need when trouble comes a callin'
Ain't the kind that's built for speed, but it's the kind that's built for heavy haulin'
You can knock it to its knees and make it bleed, still it keeps crawlin'

The Star at the End of the Highway

Written By: Andrew Gannon and Ian Dukes

Meet me in a dream tonight,
Can you slip away?
Darlin' think of me tonight when you're turning out your light
Somewhere far away

We'll sit hand in hand, remembering when
Just dreaming
We'll watch the world go by, just you, me, and the sky,
Then go back to our own lives again

I know it ain't right to hold on so tight to yesterday,
But if you're dreaming tonight, look for me by the light,
Of the star at the end of the highway

Meet me in a dream tonight,
Can you slip away?
Darlin' think of me tonight when you're turning out your light
Somewhere far away

I know it ain't right to hold on so tight to yesterday,
But if you're dreaming tonight, look for me by the light,
Of the star at the end of the highway

If you're dreaming tonight, look for me by the light,
Of the star at the end of the highway
