BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

Nottingham / UK

Duncan`s music often features numerous personal tales, which introduce the listener into the mysterious microcosm of his adventurous story-like life, yet his way with a lyric and his extraordinary voice make these moving experiences accessible to all.

Biography

Duncan was born in the Middle East, where his parents were teaching English. He grew up surrounded by barren deserts and irrigated citrus plantations. The family moved to Nottingham when Duncan was about eight years old.By thirteen he was writing songs and playing in bands around the East Midlands. At eighteen he went to study theatre in London and, for a short time, puppetry in Barcelona, feeding the irrepressible child inside.

Duncan loves music. Playing it - and playing with it. He also loves to share it. His way with a lyric and his unique voice create moving experiences accessible to almost anyone. Fearless close to the point of naïve and always open to inspiration, Duncan digs out a plethora of memorable melodies and images that can be universally appreciated and instinctively understood, crafting countless magical moments and reflecting the things that go through your head, both real and fantasy…

In a pick-and-choose culture where short-term comes before long-term, every song has to be able to stand up on its own, which suits Duncan perfectly:

“I write songs, not albums. I want to respect the individual nature of each song.”

Duncan has recorded with Nena, toured with Katie Melua (among others), played for various royalty (from the Prince of Holland to the Dalai Lama) and recorded with top producers like Andreas Herbig or Roland Spemberg(a-ha, Culch Candela, Udo Lindenberg, ich & ich).

Duncan's new album "Up Sides Down" is a brief celebration of music, crossing genres and combining many diverse influences. There's a song for everyone. It's brimming with ideas and subtle details: the more you listen, the more you'll find…

Dodging the rain

Written By: Duncan Townsend

DODGING THE RAIN

THERE’S A PLACE I LOVE
IT’S CALLED OBLIVION, YES, OBLIVION
I MET A GIRL THERE ONCE
HER NAME WAS VIVIAN, YES, VIVIAN
WELL I, I ORDERED A DRINK
AND SHE, SHE ORDERED A TAXI
I SAID: „MY BED DOESN’T WORK ANYMORE“
SHE SAID: „WE CAN SLEEP ON THE FLOOR...“

ZIG-ZAGGING THROUGH THE CITY AT NIGHT
DODGING THE RAIN
DUCKING AND DIVING ON A SERPENT OF LIGHT
DODGING THE RAIN

THERE’S A COLOUR I LOVE
IT’S CALLED INVISIBLE, YES, INVISIBLE
SHE WORE IT ALL THE TIME
HER NAME WAS ISABEL, YES, ISABEL
I, I MADE HER A DRESS
AND WE, WE MADE LOVE
I SAID: „BABY DID YOU LIKE THE WINE?“
SHE SAID: „IT WAS FINE...“

ZIG-ZAGGING THROUGH THE CITY AT NIGHT
DODGING THE RAIN
DUCKING AND DIVING ON A SERPENT OF LIGHT
DODGING THE RAIN

WATCHING THE RAIN FALL DOWN
AVOIDING THE PAIN OF LIFE...

THERE’S A PLACE I LOVE
IT’S CALLED OBLIVION... OBLIVION...
