"The problem is, nobody wants to look outside the major cities, because the real story of Southern hip-hop is the independent movement that's in these small cities," says veteran hip-hop writer Charlie Braxton, also a Jackson native, on Dr. Regina Bradley's "OutKasted Conversations."

Such an independent movement is only forming in Tupelo now. There were hometown hip-hop heroes before Rae Sremmurd: Durdy was mentored by Plantersville, Mississippi rapper D Mac from the time he was 12 up until his death a decade ago. Albums like 2002's Round 1 were what made Pistol Maine a "legendary" local hip-hop figure, by Bernadette's recollection. Studios, at home and otherwise, have cropped up over the past decade, too.
