"D. Watts Review, Brand New Start"

Southern rocker D. Watts is literally making a "Brand New Start," moving from a successful cover-band career into a more meaningful turn at her own songs honoring God.

D. Watts and writing partner/guitarist Ben Trexel offer up “Brand New Start,” ten original songs from the edgy rock camp, with heavy classic rock leanings. Whether it’s Trexel’s Neil Young-guitar on opener “Blue Skies,” the Led Zeppelin changes of “Take It All Away,” or the Fleetwood Mac rhythms of “All For You,” there is plenty to remind you of the golden age of rock. Watts’ throaty vocals are well matched with the classic vibe of the album, neither too sweet or too harsh but always smoothly emotive. She manages to hold her own against the thundering guitars of “Break Down the Walls,” and pins you to your seat with her purposeful delivery on the ebullient title track.

Having wandered off from her Christian upbringing, D. Watts returns now with a message of redemption, flowing through many of the soulful tracks of “Brand New Start.” “In His Eyes” reveals a bit of the honest desperation of her heart, and the bouncy standout track “Vessel,” with its reggae rhythms and nuanced guitar, covers her newfound desire to be useful. If you like a mid-level hard rock groove mixed with sincere message-driven lyrics and classic rock overtones, pick up D. Watts’ “Brand New Start,” released in November of 2006. - Suite 101, Kevan Breitinger
