"LISTEN: DWNTWN - "Alamo Square""

There’s certainly no shortage of talent coming out of LA at present, with the likes of Best Coast, Electric Guest and Capital Cities all having impressed so far this year. However in boy-girl duo DWNTWN the city of Angels offers much more than a couple of individuals out to secure a spot of success.

With that in mind, the pair’s brand new single is hardly a number to be underestimated. Alamo Square is perhaps the finest piece of electronic pop music you’re likely to feast your ears on this summer. Its commanding drum beats and expertly crafted electronics makes you forget about all the worries of life and whisks you off into the realms of the unknown.

It kind of makes us wish the hot summer evenings would return this side of the Atlantic, but being a Brit we must settle for whatever the English weather system throws up.

Alamo Square is taken from DWNTWN’s forthcoming Cowboys EP which will be available from June 26th. We’re not sure if that’s worldwide or just in the US, but we’re hoping we’ll be able to get our hands on it one way or another.

There’s something about Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda that is ultimately quite remarkable. Not only do they stand out head and shoulders above any other electronic outfit currently around, their music has an outlandish ability to connect with its audience in a way that we’ve never really seen before.

Anyway, here’s a full stream of Alamo Square for you – we hope you enjoy it as much we do: - Clixie UK

"[LIVE] DWNTWN @ The Echoplex, June 9th, 2012"

Saturday night was the Kitsuné party at The Echoplex which featured a few bands and DJs but the highlight of the evening was obviously DWNTWN. I’ve seen them rock stages a handful of times (Texas included!) but Saturday was the first with their new live drummer. And it was awesome. Swagger and sex appeal were overflowing from the stage as they tore through a tight set of originals, their beloved “Big Jet Plane” cover, and new cover of “I’m On Fire.” The raucous set felt too short and the whole crowd demanded an encore forcing Jamie to admit they didn’t even have any more songs to play. Next time! - The Burning Ear

"School Nights Rock | DWNTWN Set to Perform"

“If Bon Iver, The Knife and Robyn hung out at Hinanos, got trashed and made a baby…that would be DWNTWN”. Sounds like a dream, no? When we saw this Kitsune America show review of LA based electro-pop band, DWNTWN, we had to go and see for ourselves. We caught their show two wks ago at Echoplex and it felt like Xmas come early! They rocked one cool song after another, including some ace covers (Angus and Julia Stone / Bruce Springsteen). Crowd demanded an encore, but Jamie (lead singer) admitted they were out of songs! Check out their dreamy new single, “Alamo Square” off their forthcoming EP, Cowboys avail June 26, and catch DWNTWN live at their EP release party @ School Night at Bardot in Hollywood, MONDAY JUNE 25.

"Premiere: DWNTWN, ‘See My Eyes’"

DWNTWN’s new single “See My Eyes” is a work of synth-pop precision, dreamy but not delirious, breathy but not breathless, sweet but not oversaturated. It’s the latest in a long line of electro confections to emerge from the L.A. duo of Jamie Leffler and Robert Cepeda — who, believe it or not, first bonded over the Carter Family and Johnny Cash on long drives between L.A. and San Francisco. With the help of L.A. producer DJ Skeet Skeet, the duo’s folky demos morphed into something more suited to nightclubs than dusty saloons. Last fall DWNTWN released their free “Midnight Ride” mixtape of originals and covers (and electro and folk), adding to catalog that includes a handful of remixes and a couple of covers, an interesting take on “Goodbye Horses” and a not-so-much version of the oft-covered “I’m on Fire.” As for the new song, it will be available on a new Kitsuné America compilation (out next Tuesday) on which the French label offers tracks from U.S. artists such as St. Lucia, Gigamesh, Computer Magic, White Shadow, (L.A.-bred, NYC-based) Heartsrevolution and a Them Jeans remix of “Heartbeat” that almost makes Childish Gambino palatable.

Bio

DWNTWN is a dreamy synth-pop trio with catchy melodies and glistening electronic production that includes Jamie Leffler (lead vocals), Robert Cepeda (guitar, backup vocals, keyboard), and Jerrod Bettis (drums). The band came to be in the summer of 2010 after Jamie and Robert's brother ended their 5 year relationship. Armed with a freshly broken heart and having been a longtime fan of Robert’s previous band, Jamie approached him to begin writing music together with nothing but an acoustic guitar. Equally influenced and inspired by acts like Johnny Cash and Crystal Castles, they transformed these early folk demos into songs that span genres from pop, to indie, new wave and electro. Not long after they recorded these songs they met drummer Jerrod Bettis and began playing live as a trio.

In May of 2012, electronic label Kitsuné handpicked their track, “See My Eyes” to be included in the Kitsuné America compilation (which debuted #1 on the French electronic chart and top 10 in the US and EU).

DWNTWN’s new four song EP, The Red Room, will be released on November 13, 2012.

"...catchy melancholy pop with twinkling electronics that could be sung by thousands during a festival twilight in the near future." - RCRD LBL

"While DWNTWN lacks vowels, the track ("Transition") achieves supersonic consonance, marrying a Top 40 prechorus reminiscent of Sky's "ONE" with an ethereal chorus flaunting ice cold synths that sound as if they crash landed from the uncharted planet of M83." - NEON GOLD RECORDS

“See My Eyes” is a work of synth-pop precision, dreamy but not delirious, breathy but not breathless, sweet but not oversaturated." - BUZZ BANDS LA

“They know how to create atmospheric tunes that come with rich glistening pop sensibilities. The group's beautifully-crafted "Transition," an escapist dance jam that is filled with shimmering synths and a subtle dance pulse that will move you. Highly recommended.” - ARJAN WRITES

Sounds like: Ellie Goulding meets M83 and Postal Service.

Influenced by: Johnny Cash, Joy Division, Kurt Cobain, Crystal Castles... and the great American Southwest.
