Defective By Design

Defective by Design is a four-piece original, progressive Alt- rock band. All members have ten or more years of stage experience to their credit and are all extremely dedicated to their craft. They are becoming one of the most provocative bands in Toronto. These talented musicians stage no holds barred shows worthy of a major label. Their music is melodic laced with strong rhythms; it is both elegant and seductive.

Torsten and Matt had been jamming together since the early 90’s. Guitar wizard Kwon adds the sizzle and the addition of drummer Brian Coloumbe in 2008 packs the punch. Defective certainly has paid its dues by hiring and firing management that made them realize if you want something done right- Do It Yourself! Their DIY ethics have now pushed them to become their own promoter, booking agent, management and record producer.

Defective by Design was featured as artist of the month at www.MediaFreaks.com, placed second at their very first ElMacambo Supernova Battle and has shared the stage with acts like Street Pharmacy, Purr, Corporate Saturday (now The Brilliancy) and DAME (now Moeraes Fate). They have also played the Bolton Music Festival, The Kathedral, Reverb, Lee's Palace, the Red Rooster in Burlington and numerous college circuit bars. DXD was featured on the Scarborough Fusion radio show hosted by Caroline Restioux. Their first single ‘Anew’ was recorded at Voodoo Records with producer Dr. Sean. Other singles ‘Self’ and ‘Another Man’s War’ were recorded with producer mark Zubek.

In February Defective by Design were invited to participate in Battala Rockstars. Beating out 200 + other bands, surviving to the top 8 bands in the semi finals. The battles featured some great remarks from the judges including the now famous catch-phrase from Darrin Pfeiffer: ‘Defective by Design….Heavy as Fuck!’.

Battala RockStars is an innovative take on the standard battle of the bands concept. Creator, Kris Christie, decided to start Battala RockStars because “people were complaining about the lack of a platform for bands to gain exposure in Canada.” Launched in January 2008, Battala RockStars is a grassroots company that creates an opportunity of opening doors for unsigned bands exposing them to prominent members of the music industry, new fans, while gaining media coverage.

Battala Rockstars is pleased to announce its Toronto panel of judges. Music journalist Karen Bliss (RollingStone, Billboard) and Juno award-winning music producer Gavin Brown (Billy Talent/Three Days Grace) return for a second year. Joining them this year on the panel is drummer for Goldfinger Darrin Pfeiffer and a new host for battle nights, 102.1 The Edge after dark personality LoriAnn Villani.

Defective by Design plans to release their debut album in the Winter of 2009. As a result of completing the album, the band is in the process of hiring a management team and setting up bookings for a major Canadian tour.

Recently DxD has been added to a handfull of internet radio stations including Second Life's Pondig Radio and Pure Radio Kaos's CKCU. In addition the boys will be playing a live showcase after being nominated for a Toronto Independent Music Award for 'Best Live Act'.
