Heart's Wide Open - 2006

Single "Holy Is Our God" currently receiving airplay on several radio stations.

Feeling a bit camera shy

With candy on his mind, a determined two-year-old boy set out on his Big Wheel to ride four blocks, through two intersections, to a local store, leaving a trail of Cheerios along the way so he could find his way home.

Blazing trails has been characteristic of Dylan James Clark’s adventurous life ever since. Whether he was starting his own business, playing guitar on a cruise ship, heading out with the Army, or driving truck on the open road, he has never been afraid to journey into unknown territory.

Even with all the adventure, Dylan realized in his early twenties that he felt an emptiness. His heart ached for something more, a real purpose for living life rather than just existing. It was this restlessness that not only awakened a faith he had never really known, but also caused him to pull his guitar out of the closet after years of not having a desire to play. He began to write and sing about the surrender that had taken place in his heart, and now, several years later, a record is born.

Dylan’s musical roots are evident in his songwriting. Growing up in Orange County, California, he listened mostly to his dad’s oldies and his mom’s gospel music. One memory is particularly vivid when Dylan reflects on how his music came to be. He and his dad were on their way home from working construction when “Blue Suede Shoes” came on the radio. They pulled over to the side of the road and sat in the dusty old truck until the song ended and eight-year-old Dylan was formally introduced to rock and roll legend, Elvis Presley. While growing up, he became acquainted with many of the rock and roll legends and their histories. He learned and played the songs, both new and old, that have defined AM and FM radio since the beginning of rock and roll.

Practically born with a guitar in his hand, Dylan was always the entertainer. Seemingly from the time he could walk, he would often be found captivating a crowd of relatives with his music. He received his first “real” guitar at age three. Not only did his dad have to shave the neck down so his tiny fingers could wrap around it, he used a pencil as the bridge to keep the strings from buzzing when Dylan played.

While a simple pencil may have kept guitar strings from buzzing back then, it is now creating a buzz across the pages as Dylan puts into words the melodies that resonate within his heart!

This first project, Heart’s Wide Open, grew out of a collaboration of exceptional talents dedicated to discovering Dylan’s sound and voice. One such talent, Darren Bowls of Ambient House Records/Crossroads Productions, says, “Dylan is a man with a desire to use music to speak his heart to those interested in what he has to say. This project documents Dylan finding the voice behind his message. His music is current yet rootsy, edgy yet earthy, honest and real, and most of all – true to the man he is.”

Inspired by his dad’s love of “Blue Suede Shoes” and his mom’s gospel influence, Dylan’s music reveals the passionate rhythm of his soul and his desire for the things of God. He says, “We all have a choice about living life: We can be impacted by the world around us or we can make an impact on the world. I want to make an impact through the music that God has given me – that’s really the story behind this whole album.”

And as the title track states, his “Heart’s Wide Open” to do just that.
