Bio

Cleveland rock'n'rollers Early Girl have just released their first full-length album, Harrowed Ground. The quartet of Angelisa Crognale, Laura Ackerman, Becky McMahon and, welcoming back, Steph Burke celebrated the album's release summer 2009. Since the 2008 release of their six-song EP Fallow Field, Early Girl fans have been eagerly anticipating the delivery of their next release. Independently produced, Harrowed Ground offers a mix of lush layered vocals, intertwining guitar melodies, resonating bass rhythms and rooted drumbeats. The 10 songs represent the best of the band’s song collection to date. In 2005, Crognale and Ackerman founded the band Slackjaw. Playing harmony-rich folk songs, they launched at Cleveland Pride Festival growing a steady fan base playing the area’s bars and campuses. A year later, growing musically and lyrically, Crognale and Ackerman regrouped with McMahon and Burke as Early Girl. Since then, these 30 something gals have increasingly moved more towards the indie rock genre using all electric instruments and thrilling audiences from throughout Ohio. Cleveland born and bred Ackerman, an abortion clinic activist by day, takes her passion for life to her music interpreted through intensely reverberating bass lines and beautiful vocal backup. Akron transplant Crognale, daytime dog walker/whisperer, grounds the band with her fastidious music standards, wicked guitar riffs and vocal acrobatics. Returning to the band after a year long hiatus, Burke provides depth to the band’s dynamic sound with her transcendent guitar skills, synergistic back up vocals and her superb songwriting. Photo hound by day, drummer McMahon provides those syncopated pedal kicks and rock-steady rhythms that weave each tune into a fusion of danceable, sing-a-longable, super fresh indie rock.

“Early Girl is sublime in their complexity, seamlessly combining the old and
the new, original material with scattered covers, in songs that are so
breathtakingly engaging they defy classification. If the sacred and the
profane got together for a jam session, it would probably sound like an
Early Girl show.” says Gay People’s Chronicle arts and culture reporter, Anthony Glassman.

"Early Girl rocks. Smart lyrics backed up by awesome music and four fierce women who take the stage like they own it. I love these gays!" says lesbian culture phenomenon, Bitch.
