Biography

Noted for their sweat-inducing live shows, this intriguing band is hotly tipped for big things! Described by critics as ‘hypnotic’, ‘relentless’, and ‘exhilarating’, Earth the Californian Love Dream are impressively different. They sound like no-one and have songs that instantly stick, songs that take you places you never knew existed. The live shows are incredibly intense and are nothing short of ‘breathtaking’. Gritty crunching chunks of guitar fury alongside pulsating dirty bass lines and hypnotic melodies leave the audience gasping for air.

Nottingham based Earth The Californian Love Dream came to life in the summer of 2002 when the wreckage of Manatee began jamming with the renowned Sam Hempton of Six by Seven fame... things moved fast. A nice chap called John Peel was sent some of their material, and ‘bigged’ them up on national radio during ‘One Live in Nottingham’. This lead to a celebrated performance at the Queens of the Stoneage/Black Rebel Motorcycle Club aftershow party at The Social (Nottingham)...where their incendiary and quite frankly scarily loud live performance was honed and set for the future, pounding the audience with a relentless lust for squeezing the last bit of life out of rock n roll!

The latter end of 2003 witnessed giant steps forward for this Nottingham foursome. After an unconventional, but incredible performance at a secret gig at September’s ‘In The City’, Earth The Californian Love Dream were one of the most talked about bands to emerge from the Manchester convention....whipping up a storm of excitement within the music industry.

Two limited edition singles (‘In The Garden’ & ‘Porn Star’) and more radio support followed from the legendary John Peel (Radio 1), amongst others. With playlists at XFM, BBC 6 Music, Kerrang! and SBN. To top it all off, the band were asked to represent the UK during the British Phonographic Industry Showcase at South by Southwest in Texas in March 2004 – the only unsigned band on the bill! The band released their third single ‘Girls Fighting’ in November 2004, and are set to release another single 'Blackstuff' in September 2005, after a problematic period without a drummer! If you you’ve caught the band play live recently, you might have noticed Mark Richardson (Feeder, Skunk Anansi!!) helping them out…he also laid down the drums for 'Girls Fighting'.

A heady mix of musical contradictions, Earth The Californian Love Dream like to love you then fuck you then love you then fuck you then love you then fuck you then love you then fuck you. Like Motorhead meets Pink Floyd...like Motorhead meets the Beach Boys...like Motorhead meets the Carpenters...it’s all about sweetness and noise. They confuse, but they please.

“...We make music to affect you. Songs for you to sing that sound as gorgeous as terrifying. We like love and hate wrapped up in a neat little chorus. Our music is the most important thing in the world and we recognise the tragedy and sing about it...” (Huw Costin)

Between them they love Black Sabbath, Pitman, Captain Beefheart, Primal Scream, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Burt Bacharach, Julian Cope, AC/DC, My Bloody Valentine, Pink Floyd, The Who, The Police, Saxon, Joy Division, Motorhead, Hawkwind, The Doors, Loop, ZZ top, Free, Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, Stereolab, Ken Dodd and the Diddymen, The Animals, All Saints, Stone Roses, and Napalm Death.

Expect big, loud, loved up rock n’ roll type things from Earth The Californian Love Dream...

Lyrics

In The Garden

Written By: Huw Costin / Chris Middleton

In the garden she came
In the garden she came
With that sound in my ears
With that sound in my ears

I knew that I was born
I knew that I was born

In the garden she came
In the garden she came
From above dizzy heights
From above dizzy heights

I knew that I was born
I knew that I was born

‘Took a little time to wake up darling
‘Took a lot of love and a fresh face baby
Wind has changed and I’m calling calling
Wind has changed and I’m falling falling

I knew that I was born
I knew that I was born

And from above dizzy heights
I knew that I was right
And I really wanna say
Please don’t go away

Blackstuff

Written By: Huw Costin

Been dealing in blackstuff
All evil and mean
Been looking for the cracks in the pavement and the things that loose their sheen
Jesus was one time and was buried a long time ago
Only one place to go right now
Only one rocky road to know

If you don’t stop fucking around with me
I’m gonna cut you down
I’m gonna cut you down

Jesus was one time
And like Moses I parted the sea
Pushed down with a steady hand and all the people they look at me
They say
‘You move much too slowly’
‘You move much too slowly’
They say
‘You move much too slowly’
‘You move much too slowly’

I have been here
Such a long time ago
Na night driving
Na night driving in your car
It comes down
Before
The wire

I take it one time
Then I do it again
Push down with a steady hand
Faster on the bend
All your fear is in hindsight
All your fear is in hindsight
All your fear is in hindsight
All your fear is in hindsight

I have been here
Such a long time ago
Andalucia
Appellation In My dreams
It comes down
Before
The wire

I take the one time
Then I do it again
Push down whenever I want
Faster on the bend
You move much too slowly
You move much too slowly
You move much too slowly
You move much too slowly
I was born to make you happy
I was born to make you happy
I was born to make you happy
I was born to make you happy

Easy

Written By: Huw Costin

Are you hidden away,
Too scared to scream,
Don’t turn to acid,
It will fuck you up,
It will tear your mind apart,
‘Till you no longer succumb,
To the beauty that surrounds you,
Like pouring rain,
Everything,
Is amazing temporarily,
All stands,
To the level of religious harmony,
My head screwed up,
Seven to eleven,
My head screwed up,
Seven to eleven,

Easy,
So easy,
Easy,
So easy,

Trees of doves,
Bearing down on you,
Wont be cut down,
With the double edged sword of a lover,
Bearing down on you,
Could be no other,
I have become,
A mentally fractured machine,
See around the back,
Only spread myself thin,
See around the back,
Every way but in,
See around the back,
Every way but in,

Easy,
So easy,
Easy,
So easy.
