Biography

It is with great pride and immense pleasure that we introduce our new project in Bluegrass music - the East River Mountain Band. This collaboration showcases a group of individuals accomplished in their own right on the music scene with a mission to create new, original Bluegrass tunes that pay tribute to the time-honored genre and style of mountain music.

Members of ERMB are:

Marc and Chris Maynard - this dynamic duo are father and son hailing from the mountains of West Virginia.  Marc and Chris have a passion for the art and technical excellence of bluegrass music and both are multi-instrumentalists with Marc accomplished on Banjo / Mandolin / Bass and Chris an incredible prodigy on Mandolin and Flat-pick Guitar.  Together they have had the privilege of playing for and touring with the late, great Melvin Goins, a pioneer and icon in the Bluegrass genre.  They have played many of the largest festivals in the country including Bean Blossom, Uncle Pen Days, Starvey Creek Bluegrass Festival in MO, Yeehaw Junction in FL, Ralph Stanley’s Homecoming Festival in VA, Summersville Bluegrass Festival in WV, The Mountaineer Opry House in Milton, WV, just to name a few.  At the young age of 14, Chris has enjoyed the honor of sharing the Grand Ole Opry stage with Melvin and  member Mike Snider.  They also later formed the Streamliner Bluegrass Band and now have made their home with ERMB.

Ali Shumate, a native of Bluefield West Virginia and now residing in Florida,  has enjoyed much success over her bluegrass / country career.  Her 10-song original album, Heartbreak Train was released in 2006, which was recorded in Chelsea Studios Nashville and released at the Gibson Showcase Theater in Nashville.  She and her band toured the new album across the mid-Atlantic States on an FYE Music Store Tour to promote the single "Heartbreak Train", which charted on Billboard Single Sales for several weeks.  She has played many bluegrass festivals across the East Atlantic and was honored to receive the key to the city of Pocahontas Virginia in recognition of her music career and her family's longstanding history in mountain music over the past 150 years. Ali is a member of CMA, SPBGMA, ASCAP and NSAI.  Some of Ali's other accomplishments:

. Hearbreak Train was selected as Country Album of the Year Vox Populi by Independent Music Awards sponsored by Musicians Atlas / Borders Music.

. ASCAP songwriting award in the popular / jazz music division.

. Semifinalist in the ISC International Songwriting Competition in the Americana Division for "A Good Woman's Hard To Find" -  fun response to Brad Paisley's Fishing Song, "I'm Gonna Miss Her".

. Great American Songwriting Contest - Honorable Mention Award for Heartbreak Train.

. We Are Listening Songwriting Contest - Honorable Mention Award for Heartrbreak Train.

Together, Marc, Chris and Ali have formed the East River Mountain Band.

HEART-BREAK TRAIN - Written by Ali Shumate, Copyright 2004

(No instrumental intro, start with 3-part vocal harmony acapella on word “Heartbreak”, then instruments join in on next beat)

(Chorus)

Heart-break, Heart-break Train is on the track,

when you get on board that train you ain’t never comin’ back.

Well, my baby up and left me, and it’s a matter of fact,

I’m climbin’ board that train that's called Heart-break.

(Verse 1)

I had a good man, their hard to find,

but that good man nearly drove me right out of my mind.

I wanted romance, to settle down,

he wanted all my love but still he ran around.

(Chorus)

Heart-break, heart-break train is on the track.

Once you get on board that train you ain’t never comin back.

Well my baby up and left me, and it’s a matter of fact.

I’m climbin’ board that train that’s called Heart-break

(Tag)

Well, my baby up and left me, and it’s a matter of fact.

I’m climbin’ board that train that’s called Heartbreak.

TRAVELIN’ STATE OF MIND

Chorus Out of time, cause I’m on my way to somewhere,
though I hate to leave you back here, when you say that you’ll be mine.
I appreciate the offer but I’m runnin’ way behind.
I’m just in a travelin’ state of mind.

Verse 1 I’ve always been a rambler movin’ here and movin’ there.
The highway’s been the place that I call home.
A rollin’ stone, I roll alone but now you’re in my path,
and suddenly it’s hard for me to go.

Chorus Out of time, cause I’m on my way to somewhere,
though I hate to leave you back here, when you say that you’ll be mine.
I appreciate the offer but I’m runnin’ way behind.
I’m just in a travelin’ state of mind.

Verse 2 I hope you’ll try to find it in your heart to understand,
I’ve got to keep on movin’ down that road.
I know I’m leavin’ way to fast to build a memory,
but in my heart you’ll always be my home.

Repeat
Chorus Out of time, cause I’m on my way to somewhere,
though I hate to leave you back here, when you say that you’ll be mine.
I appreciate the offer but I’m runnin’ way behind.
I’m just in a travelin’ state of mind.

Tag I’m just in a travelin’ state of mind.

The Winds They Are A Changin'

THE WINDS THEY ARE A CHANGIN’
Written by Ali Shumate - Copyright 2004

(Verse 1)

I’ve been lovin’ you for as long as I know of,

and my heart has always been true.

But lately there’s been many changes in your love,

and it’s left me feelin’ blue.

(Chorus)

And the winds, they are a changin’,

and the cold north wind is a blowin’.

It’s easy to see that your love’s gone for me

and we better get ready for a cold one.

(Verse 2)

I know you’ve been comin’ home later and later,

and you can’t say where you’ve been.

Her perfume still lingers, I almost can see her,

and the truth is settin’ in.

(Repeat chorus)

(Tag) It’s easy to see your love’s gone for me,
and we better get ready for a cold one.

Waitin' On The Other Side

Waitin’ On The Other Side
Lyrics & Melody by Ali Shumate
Copyright 2006

VERSE 1

There’s a better place, waitin’ on the other side,
where Jesus stands a watchin’ for my soul.
And when I see his face, waitin’ on the other side,
I’ll know my journey’s done and I’ll be home.

CHORUS

‘Cause when I cross that River Jordan all my burdens will be gone.
Ain’t nothin’ gonna hurt me any more.
For eternity oh how happy I will be,
on the other side of heaven with my Lord.

VERSE 2

There are streets of gold, waitin’ on the other side,
more beautiful than any ever seen.
And there’s no sadness there, waitin’ on the other side.
I’ll leave my troubles here and I’ll be free.

REPEAT CHORUS

VERSE 3

I’ll see Mom and Dad, waitin’ on the other side.
What a beautiful reunion that will be.
There’ll be no more goodbyes, spoken on the other side.
We’ll be together for eternity.

REPEAT CHORUS

TAG

And for eternity, won’t you come and walk with me,
on the other side of heaven with my Lord.

Same Old Me, Different You

SAME OLD ME, DIFFERENT YOU
Melody and Lyrics - Ali Shumate
Copyright 2004

VERSE 1
I know your face, but it seems out of place,
and now, I understand why.
I share your name, but all it contains,
is a sign that we’re livin’ a lie.

CHORUS
You’ve changed in ways, I can’t explain.
But the one thing that seems to stay true.
Our lives together, will never be,
cause it’s same old me, different you.
BRIDGE
I still remember how you made me feel,
but now I know it’s no longer real.
You’re a stranger to me, and all I can see,
is that I’m not the one that you need.
REPEAT CHORUS
TAG
Our lives together will never be,
cause it’s same old me, different you.

Part Of The Plan

Written By: Ali Shumate

INTRO:
My little boy came up to me, just the other day.

He asked what Heaven meant to me, and this is what I said....

VERSE 1:
Somewhere, I see lots of happy people - smiling faces all around.

And I feel, all the joy they have around them - not a sad one to be found.

CHORUS:
Now I know that place is out there and I'll try to find my way - I'll do the best I can.

And I'll just keep believing, it's all part of The Plan.

VERSE 2:
Some way, I can see a new day risin' - what a day that will be.

I hope, that we'll all be there together - as one big family.

BRIDGE:
Now I know that place is out there and I'll try to find my way.

I don't have all the answers, just livin' day-to-day.

My loved ones went before me and they're waiting at the gate.

I hope some day I'll join them, and hear the good Lord say:

VERSE 3:
Welcome - you're forgiven by the master, and your work is now all done.

And I'll pass, through the pearly gates of Heaven, and kiss my family one-by-one.

CHORUS:
Now I know that place is out there and I'll try to find my way - I'll do the best I can.

And I just keep believing, it's all part of The Plan.
