"A New Addiction"

Leave it to me to find a new band while reading the sports section of the newspaper.

The other day, I was reading about one of the local high school's latest triumphs in baseball and upcoming American Legion team in the newspaper. The preview of the American Legion season mentioned that one of team's best pitchers would not be participating this summer because of a commitment to his band, East Coast Addiction.

Well, I certainly had to find out more about the band. Their MySpace page had some interesting clips, and after some searching I discovered that the band is on iTunes an has an EP out entitled "Little Words for Big Ideas".

Since I love new music I downloaded it. It has some really good songs it with great original writing. If you like the Alternative/Power Pop/Indie genre of music they are a good band for you.

My personal favorite track is "Early September," but all the song are actually quite well done. I would also recommend the slower, "Embittered Winter." I think that track might be the most important one on the EP. While "Early Septmeber" and "Back Seat Love Song" have obvious staying power as singles, "Embittered Winter" shows depth, soul and talent.

The synth in "Embittered Winter" gives the song a slight edge during the refrain that brings out the emotional depth of the tune. There is a generational yearning that is very evident in the song. My only complaint would be that at 2:25 the song is just too quick to develop fully. It just seems to end too soon. Although, I guess that could be considered a good thing, because it certainly leaves you wanting more.

"Back Seat Love Song" is a classic New Jersey song. Since the band is geared towards teenagers in the tri-state area at the moment, this track is an obvious headliner. Its another quick trip. It's like a Jollyracher. The song is tasty and great while there, but it doesn't last long and leaves you with a happy feeling.

If you get the chance, check out East Coast Addiction on their MySpace page or on iTunes. You'll be glad you did.
