"“Nine beautifully composed tracks” ****"

An English folk acoustic sound layered with harmonium and textured with glockenspiel.

Songwriter Guy Martin and guitarist Chris Evans started recording an English take on the Americana genre that had inspired them over the past few years. Their plans changed on the arrival of Phil Di Palma, whose passion for experimental, Indian classical music meant that the guys began to reshape the material they had started with. An English folk acoustic sound layered with harmonium and textured with glockenspiel is the effective sound. Tranquil, soothing and invigorating, songs like Soundblaster are radio-friendly and would provide a great listen for a relaxing journey.

Partly recorded in a converted windmill in rural Norfolk, Eastern Seaboard’s sound feels rather earthy, particularly Last Train Out of Here. Before You Go is a feel-good melody, sweet with soft harmonies and gentle music from acoustic guitar combined with glockenspiel and autoharp.

Many folk acoustic albums become miserable and tedious, Eastern Seaboard are not one of those bands who fall into that trap. Nine beautifully composed tracks, in which miserable or boring do not come to mind.

"Low key melancholia out of Norfolk"

Eastern Seaboard are a trio of melodically inclined Norfolkers, and their debut record sees them turning out a sad-core strain of Americana that hints at the melancholic depths of Mark Kozelek while allowing for a janglier pop sensibility. There are some wonderful moments to this record...Eastern Seaboard have crafted a resonant debut.

Bio

Songwriter Guy Martin and guitarist Chris Evans started recording their debut album as a melodic, English take on the Americana that had inspired them. But the arrival of Phil Di Palma (who had played with Chris in indie-folk darlings Angelou) and his love of experimental, drone and Indian classical music, added lush new textures to the songs.

Recording in various locations including an old cinema and a converted windmill in the wilds of their native Norfolk, the band combine acoustic and electric instruments and multi-layered harmonies, with less familiar elements such as Indian harmonium, shruti box, glockenspiel and marxophone.

The debut album includes the track MOONDUST which Andrew Smith, broadcaster and best-selling author, describes as “Perfect. The song says in a few minutes what it took me a whole book to say. I love this.”

Live they retain the quiet atmospherics as an acoustic three-piece, or as a full five-piece electric band.
