The East Portal Express, had... a true jam-band flavor, with familiar ingredients served nicely.
...the band’s guitarist, Shawn Vreeland, was the focal point, and he’d step forward and launch into meaty solos heavy with hammer-ons and pull-offs, the kind my old pals with thick mustaches would call “tasty.”
...the band’s set typically changes from song to song, based on who wrote the tune, and some of that was in evidence Saturday—a song by Bisel had a funky, Merl Saunders and Jerry Garcia feel, whereas one by Bohl was more strongly rooted in pop-music convention.

The East Portal Express
Formed in Sacramento, California, in August 2007, The East Portal Express is a four-piece musical ensemble that is in the business of transporting minds and behinds to a higher plane. Able to deftly play rock, funk, jazz, psychedelia, country, and blues (sometimes in the same song) and effortlessly improvise, the East Portal Express continues the tradition of such legendary bands as Phish and the Grateful Dead while simultaneously creating their own distinctive sound.
Since forming, the band has been hard at work captivating local audiences with their energetic live shows and near-telepathic musical communication. Recently they have opened for bands such as Blue Turtle Seduction and Izabella in addition to headlining a New Year's Eve show at the Fox and Goose in Sacramento, where they played to a standing-room-only crowd.
Combining a mixture of well-crafted originals and well-chosen covers, their live performances are destined to make them a staple of the jam band scene.
