"PREMIERE: Easy Lover - End Of The Season (Rewards Remix)"

What defines an Easy Lover? One who’s up for bondage or vanilla, depending on the request? One who is so enamored of life that they stare at sunflowers so long they miss the subway? Or maybe it’s someone who is easy to love; shining, fun, unflappable? Rewards thinks so on his redux of “End Of The Season,” letting the o.g.’s operatice vox and pop curviness slip in and out of crunch bass, electrobells and a rat-a-tat beat. Find the original on the duo’s new EP over on Amazon. - RCRD LBL

"Easy Lover: "End Of The Season" (Gavin Russom Remix) (Prefix Premiere)"

Brooklyn-based duo Easy Lover released its eponymously titled introductory EP earlier this month, and since has had the three-song album's single, "End Of The Season," remixed by numerous artists.

Today, Prefix is proud to premiere one of those remixes. Reconstructed by DFA artist Gavin Russom, the new take on the ethereal original is a longer, crunchier song. The producer stretches out the track, adding reverb and loops to vocalist Kali Holloway's whimsical voice. He also subs droning electronics for the original's otherworldly synthesizers, creating a grittier, more primal sound.

You can purchase the EP here and listen to Gavin Russom's remix below. - Prefixmag.com

"ALBUM REVIEW: EASY LOVER’S SELF-TITLED EP"

After stints fronting New York indie bands The Affair and Day For Night, powerhouse singer Kali Holloway is back with a new project, Easy Lover, a collaboration with Brooklyn multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Wimmer.

Together, they’ve recorded a self-titled three-song EP that puts a new spin on the Ronnie Spector-fronting-X vibe of the Affair. Holloway dials her voice back from full-throttle, without losing any of the power. It’s just slower-burning here as she sings with languid passion on ”End of the Season” over layers of synthesizer, a wall of shuddering guitar and a booming vintage-style girl-group beat. (The EP comes with three wildly divergent different remixes of the song, by British producer Elan Polushko, DFA’s Gavin Russom and Rewards — that is, Aaron Pfenning, formerly of Chairlift.)

Holloway is deliberate on “New Maggie,” her vocals ringing over glimmers of keyboards and a boxy, reverb-soaked beat, while “Robo Doris” ratchets up the electronics, surrounding Holloway’s voice with little blooms of sound that blink on and off, before a massive wave of fuzz-tone guitar sweeps through the song. It’s an alluring reintroduction to a singer with considerable charisma who sounds like she’s found the accompaniment to match. - Listen, Dammit

"EASY LOVER, ‘END OF THE SEASON’ – FREE MP3 DOWNLOAD"

Easy Lover is new Brooklyn duo Kali Holloway and Jeremy Wimmer, who fuse classic electronic keyboard sounds with guitars and Holloway’s gorgeous voice to stunning effect. Today we get a sneak peek at their new EP and a free download of their single ‘End of the Season.’

“There’s something about a pop melody, the way a classic pop melody can prop up a whole song,” Holloway tells Diffuser.fm. “Even when it’s covered in dust and haze and warped by the lolling sounds around it — and we like all those things, too, very much — you can still hear it underneath in our songs, I think. It’s just such a nice sound to wrap yourself in.”

The band’s Facebook page lists their genre as “lullabies and other stories,” and indeed it is very much a nice sound. Holloway’s voice rings out with the stark clarity of a pinged silver bell. But there’s also pain and longing in the tune — a kind of Kate Bush-esque yearning.

Though the band only has a self-released EP so far, they’ve already attracted a remix from Rewards (Aaron P from Chairlift), and we expect more good things in their future. Grab the free download of ‘End of the Season’ below. - Diffuser.fm

"Unsigned Corner: Easy Lover"

Name: Easy Lover (Kali Holloway - Vocals, Jeremy Wimmer - Instrumentals)

Sounds Like: A blend of swooning, dreamy synth sounds mixed with classic pop songwriting, girl group beats, and lush vocal harmonies. Like 4AD meets Berlin crossed with the Ronettes.

History: Kali: You know how stories about trying to find bandmates using Craigslist are mostly stories about why you should never try to find bandmates using Craigslist? Easy Lover's story somehow ended up not being one of those. I'd sung for a few bands of varying success but was between projects and wasn't sure what to do next, so I put an ad up and waited. I heard from lots of people, met a few of them, but only felt like I could make really good music with one of them, who turned out to be Jeremy. I remember that he had a beard then and was wearing a tie dyed shirt and finding that a little confusing, but we talked about Marquee Moon for like five minutes and it was cake from there. Jeremy: The fact that Kali let me ramble on about Marquee Moon for five minutes was definitely a good sign. I've actually never had a bad experience using Craigslist in my life, as crazy as that sounds.

Something Special: Kali: I'm double jointed in my legs and arms and played viola growing up. (I was first chair and even thought I might join an orchestra when I grew up). I hate carrots. Jeremy: I just discovered that I hate carrots – I eat the whole bag and then I feel terrible. Also, I got a perfect score on my ACT. Every time I say that, my grandmother smiles.

Future Plans: To be decided!

UC Takeaway: Easy Lover's creation story is a lesson in embracing life's happy little surprises. We've suggested time and time again that bands and solo artists keep up the musical connections they make throughout their journey; many groups we've featured thus far have found their band members that way. But it's also important to remember that no idea is too "silly" or "ridiculous" or "unlikely" when it comes to this industry. Taking risks can, like always, lead to enormous rewards. So maybe you put up a sign on a local music-related watering-hole's bulletin board. Maybe your band sings some tunes on a street corner. Or maybe, like Kali, you post an ad on Craigslist and find your Jeremy. The same principle holds when it comes to things like sending out your demo or marketing your shows or your music. You never know what action will get you noticed. So don't have any regrets or "woulda coulda shoulda" moments and instead put yourself out there! While you're doing that, listen below to "New Maggie" by Easy Lover. - Unsigned Corner.com

"End of the Season Exclusive Video Premiere"

We're excited to premiere the very latest from Kali Holloway and Jeremy Wimmer, the soulful dreamers behind Easy Lover. Their music video for the popular tune "End of the Season" is just as creative and beautifully sad as the song that inspired it, full of sullied crepe ribbons and lost lovers. But heartbreak takes on a whole new kind of whimsy when viewed through the eyes of this imaginative duo.

We interviewed the artists, who said of their video "We worked with a really amazing director named Stosh Mintek who talked us through a lot of stuff -- what the song meant to each of us, how he heard the song sonically and lyrically, what we wanted the video to look like -- and then he came up with a treatment that we both loved....He's our fairy godmother." There's certainly a magic to the video -- you move through a landscape of memories in a visual stream of consciousness. Meanwhile, singer Kali Holloway stares out at you with an unnervingly steady gaze, even as she bares her soul.

It's no surprise that this song has been remixed by some big-players in the dance music scene, including Rewards and Gavin Rossum (DFA). Of their success, the artists humbly say that they "loved hearing the ways that people reinterpreted the song, which I think is kind of an honor to experience. You can get really used to the sound of your own voice, so to speak. Hearing other people's takes on your music just gives you new perspective." Their freshness and honesty's no front, there's nothing packaged or Instagramed about this duo. Enjoy the video right here on Baeble! - Baebel.com

"Song of the Day: End of the Season by Easy Lover"

She’s got that whole Katie Stelmanis thing going on. You know. Intensity of emotion. Incoming inclement weather. Everything painted with MASSIVE sweeps of the brush. Not a pause for breath because the pauses for breath are part of the music itself. Terrifying, really. (I could be entirely missing the point here, I can’t deny: maybe she has that whole Lana Del Rey thing going on. Maybe that’s a better reference in 2012. MTV Buzz has her down on Twitter as “gauzy and beautiful”. And I really don’t want to deny such a respected source. She really ought to cover her tracks better, if that’s the case.)

Doers any of the above even matter? Fuck authenticity. Fuck the notion that because someone might have listened to someone else it lessens the value of what they’re creating. Even at the quietest of volumes ’End Of The Season’ sounds way too loud in my tender, sleepless ears.

Kali Holloway, the singer behind this, used to be in a Mod-flecked band I liked – The Affair. But to compare them to what she sounds like now would be like contrasting The Like with EMA. Sure, you can do it. Seems a little meaningless, though. The reason I enjoyed The Affair was because they reminded me of my brief infatuation with ’78 femme-led band The Photos: and the reason I like Easy Lover is… um… anything but. We’ll forgive them the fact they’re named after a Phil Collins song although I suspect that that knowledge will preclude me and her from ever being arm-wrestling buddies.

So. Yeah. Whatever. Great sound. Great singiing. Great song. - Collapse Board / Everett True

Bio

Easy Lover, the Brooklyn-based duo of multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Wimmer and singer Kali Holloway – who Pitchfork says “has the kind of voice that sounds like it emanates from her entire body” – makes music that is complex yet accessible, minimalist but comfortably spacious, and thoughtfully crafted yet effortlessly rendered.

The two met when Holloway – former vocalist for The Affair and Day For Night – decided she wanted to make music in a more intimate band than she'd experienced before. The singer posted an ad on Craigslist looking for a collaborator.

"You know how stories about trying to find bandmates using Craigslist are mostly stories about why you should never try to find bandmates using Craigslist?" Holloway jokingly asks. "Easy Lover's story somehow ended up not being one of those."

The singer heard from lots of people, but only Wimmer fit the bill. "I felt like I could only make really good music with one of them, who turned out to be Jeremy," she says. "We met, and I remember that he had a beard then and was wearing a tie dyed shirt. That was confusing, but then we talked about Marquee Moon and it was cake from there."

The two worked to find their sound – which ultimately led to arrangements that belied the sum of their parts. "We learned that in a duo, you have learn how to construct a song so that the music can feel like it has weight and depth," says Wimmer. "It took awhile, but with Kali's huge vocals and some experimenting with composition, we ultimately found it."

In July 2012, the two released their debut EP, a three-song introduction to the band that includes remixes of lead single "End of the Season" by dance music luminaries Rewards (formerly of Chairlift), Gavin Russom (DFA) and Elan Polushko (Rong Music). "End of the Season" also quickly gained attention from an array of music blogs (Diffuser, Prefix, Baebel, MTV Buzz and others), as well as legendary music writer Everett True, who chose lead single "End of the Season" as his Song of the Day. "Great sound. Great singing. Great song," he wrote.

A blend of swooning synth sounds mixed with girl group beats, and lush vocal harmonies, Easy Lover's music has been described by one music writer as sounding like "4AD meets Berlin crossed with the Ronettes" – but the duo insists their music is classic pop at heart.

“There’s something about a pop melody, the way a classic pop melody can prop up a whole song,” Holloway says. “Even when it’s covered in dust and haze and warped by the lolling sounds around it — and we like all those things, too, very much — you can still hear it underneath in our songs, I think. It’s just such a nice sound to wrap yourself in.”
