"Live review: Echogram"

“Helloooooooooooooooooooo Wembley”. Okay, so the frontman of Irish rockers, Echogram, doesn’t actually say that when he comes onstage but he may as well do. Shaking the cobwebs out of the static crowd, the five piece from Cork hurtle into their set as if life itself depended on it tonight. They’ve already decided they’re a stadium rock band, they just haven’t got their stadium yet which certainly makes for an engaging show in the decidedly non-stadium-like surroundings of 299. Tight and riff-heavy with a cluster of solid rock numbers such as ‘Conspiracy’ and ‘Direkt Hit’, there’s plenty of potential in these swaggering twenty-somethings even if the electronics occasionally tend to wander into cheesy territory, with a whiff of, eek, Savage Garden around one of their ballads.

Yes, it’s clearly aimed at the American rock market but some of us aren’t too proud to admit a guilty pleasure or two from that area, and if Echogram keep storming ahead like this, we may find ourselves racking up a couple more. If there’s anything that lets the otherwise professional look of the group down, it’s their derivative stage presence. Sure, they’ve set out their stock as purveyors of US-stylee mainstream rock but there’s no need to strut and posture by-numbers. No denying these boys have confidence but confidence in their ability to be Echogram and not Bon Jovi would certainly go a long way.

"ECHOGRAM release 'Walk In The Sun REMIXED' EP digitally"

Irish band Echogram recently released their 'Walk In The Sun Remixed' EP featuring six new takes on the band's debut single from electronic artists Ghostcopy, Kurtis Mantronik, Real and Bantum.

Echogram is one of Ireland's most promising bands. Their single, "Walk In The Sun", received huge support from local press and Irish radio, which lead to great headway on the UK airwaves. The band traveled to the States for the second time last winter in support of their first single, performing in and around Hollywood. Due to the amazing feedback from music fans worldwide, the band decided to team up with four electronic artists to hear their unique perspectives of the song.

Echogram frontman Kilian Pettit explains, "I've always loved bands who are open to and embrace dance music and electronic music culture in general. Two of the biggest influences on the band and me are Depeche Mode and U2. Throughout the 90s they consistently sent their music out to be remixed and I always really liked that idea." He continues, "We've had a couple of remixes done already and every time I'm excited to hear how other artists interpret our music. I'm never disappointed."

The 'Walk In The Sun Remixed' EP was released digitally through most online retail outlets in Ireland and the UK on Monday, July 18th and within the U.S. on Tuesday, July 19th.

"Review: Walk In The Sun REMIXED"

This past week saw the release of Echogram’s Walk In The Sun REMIXED, a remix EP that contains a number of tracks by four electronic artists from both at home and abroad, Ghostcopy, Kurtis Mantronik, Real, and Cork’s own, Bantum. The artists have each reworked the song in their own distinctive manner and the result is quite interesting. The EP is a textbook example of how one song can be interpreted in many different ways, and each interpretation gives the track a new life.

The EP opens with what Echogram frontman Killian Petit describes a “hands in the air summer remix” by Ghostcopy. There’s a serious Chemical Brothers vibe off this track. Its relentless throb, the peaks and troughs put you in mind of ‘Star Guitar’. The extra lead synths added by Ghostcopy compliment Petit’s vocal line. It’s great to hear a contrasting but complimentary take on the band’s usual sound of electro driven rock.

With an Anglo-Jamaican background, Kurtis Mantronik’s take on Walk In The Sun is very different to the opener. This track would be right at home in any of the world’s clubs, or dance festivals. Listening to the swirls and pulses here, it’s hard not to imagine the tracks on a bigger stage. Kurtis gives equal priority to Petit’s vocal, something which Ghostcopy seemed to shrug off slightly, and the mix here is nicely balanced between the underlying rhythms and the vocal. The EP also features a subtly heavier version of the track for the remix’s true home on the dancefloor with a dub version of the song.

Next up is Real’s take on the song and again, we shoot off in another direction. It’s an altogether more laid back mix with a distinctly Garage tone. The standard Garage rhythm patterns open the song with pattering hi-hats, snapping rim hits and sporadic kicks as Real plays with the more subversive elements of Walk In The Sun. If Kurtis Mantronik gave a good balance between the vocals and the rhythms, Real gives whole bias towards the rhythms and vocals only feature slightly, and even then they are very much effected. Not that that’s a big gripe, but this reviewer is a sucker for a good vocal line, especially on tracks such as this. That said, the laid-back take on the band’s debut single here is great.

The fourth and final remix on the EP is by Cork’s own Bantum, aka Ruairi Lynch. Obviously each artist on the release brought their own style of music into their track and Bantum is no exception. Like his previous remixes for other artists have showcased, Lynch is a lover of reverb, big effected beats and even more effected vocals. All these traits are showcased here to great effect. It’s very much a shoegazey track and is easily the most lo-fi on the EP, but there’s a certain charm to that. As a whole, it’s an interesting EP; a nice departure from their usual sound. Definitely one to check out.

Bio

What does Cypress Hill, Fleetwood Mac, Snoop Dogg, Marilyn Manson, the San Fernando Valley heat and a freezing cottage in Cork have in common?

ECHOGRAM

...the Irish 4-piece, have gone to extremes recently...

The story of their debut album began at Cypress Hill’s Temple Studios, what was once the legendary Cornerstone Studios (Fleetwood Mac, The Killers), with Snoop Dogg’s crew hollering their approval from the control room and ends back in rural Ireland in the cottage / studio owned by producer Ciaran O’Shea (ex-Cyclefly). From the blistering heat of ‘the Valley’ in Los Angeles to the coldest winter Ireland has experienced in 50 years, the finished album tracks were sent back to Sean Beavan (Marilyn Manson, NIN, No Doubt) to mix at his Hollywood Hills studio while Marilyn Manson’s contorted portrait of Sean’s dog presided over the proceedings.

This trans-Atlantic journey created an album with a very international feel. The ECHOGRAM sound has been described as both “rock with a digital sheen” and “dark pop music”; big guitars, big drums and soaring vocals across a backdrop of electronica.

Fans include Chester Bennington of Linkin Park, Robert Smith, Alan Moulder and James Brown (Placebo, NIN, Foo Fighters, Jane’s Addiction) to name a few. Between 2007 and the present, ECHOGRAM have had extensive airplay making them one of the most played unsigned acts on Irish radio. Debut single ‘Conspiracy’ (mixed by Adrian Bushby – Band of Skulls, Muse, Depeche Mode) spent 8 weeks in the airplay Top 10 on Dublin's Phantom FM (equivalent to Xfm), while going straight in at No.1 on downloadmusic.ie. The recent releases of 'Walk In The Sun' and 'Walk In The Sun REMIXED' have reinforced ECHOGRAM's strong presence on Irish airwaves, and have also made headway for the band on UK radio through Xfm and BBC regional stations.

The film and TV world is discovering the ECHOGRAM sound… with songs featured on the MySpace online drama “FREAK”, and recent licensing deals with the MTV and E! Networks to include tracks on their TV shows.

As a live act, ECHOGRAM are one of the most exciting, energy fraught outfits in the country. Lead singer and songwriter Kilian Pettit has already proved himself a very charismatic frontman, capable of commanding an audience anywhere they play. ECHOGRAM made their debut LA appearance at the Viper Room last November to rave reviews, as well as an interview and acoustic session by Kilian for Fox TV and an exclusive interview for LA online music blog, Metrogum.

The rest of 2011 is action pact; the band release 'Conspiracy EP' at the end of September, and will be heading back Stateside for a 3 week tour taking in shows on both coasts, including Hotel Cafe in LA and New York's Bowery Electric. A week of shows in UK college towns follows in November. The video for 'Conspiracy' has been getting great feedback, the band are in talks with AOL.com to preview it on their music site.
