"Echowide Rock the El Mocambo"

Toronto band Echowide brought their hard rock stylings to the El Mocambo this past Saturday night, playing in radio station Y108’s Last Band Standing Competition.

Mark Richard (Drummer) Ryan Morgan (Vocals) Brent Johnston (Guitar/Vocals) Andrew Osborne (Bass) have been making music together for over a decade, in one configuration or another. Coming together right here in Toronto, this hardworking foursome have played show after show this year, including an appearance at Canadian Music Fest. With a universally appealing heavy rock sound, Echowide is slowly but surely building a strong following in this city’s music scene.

The vast upstairs space of the El Mocambo was scattered with people as Echowide opened their fairly early set with “Infrasonic”. By the time with last notes died away, fans had started pressing towards the front, and bystanders were wandering closer to find out who was making that great music they were hearing. “Standard” featured a hauntingly melodic bassline by Osbourne that floated beneath Morgan’s raw vocals to create a poignant, almost ballad-like song. Morgan’s vocals held an Eddie Veddar strength with a Thom Yorke quality on “A long ago”. Richard’s energetic charisma came out in his pounding drums as he thrashed and smashed behind the kit. “No son of mine” featured dark and burdened lyrics with a killer guitar solo reminiscent of early Metallica. And Osbourne was the picture of concentration as he ripped classic rock riffs on the set closing powerhouse “Racehorse”.

Echowide’s mature and clean cut look belie a heavy and hard hitting sound that resonates deeply. Combined with an amalgamation of nineties music that’s comfortably familiar, Echowide’s fans become fans without even realizing it. A never heard before song feels like an old favourite, a brand new beat flows through the body creating an established rhythm. The music this band makes is new yet time honoured, creating a recipe for success. See for yourself; be sure to catch Echowide at their next free show, June 2nd at the Smiling Buddha Bar (961 College Street - just west of Dovercourt). - Examiner.com - Nadia Elkharadly
