"Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival in NY"

NGSTON, Jamaica -- The Roy Wilkins Park in Queens, New York was the perfect setting for the Grace Jamaican Jerk Festival's fourth staging.

Caribbean food, art and craft, fashion and entertainment attracted over 15,000 patrons to the venue.

According to the event's organiser, Eddy Edwards, it was a "huge success".

"The support this year is bigger than we had last year. When we came to New York we had no expectations, and I just want to thank all the patrons and sponsors who have supported the festival," Edwards told OBSERVER ONLINE Observer.

Over 40 booths offered diverse jerk foods, ranging from chicken to pork, shrimp, sausages, lobster and fish. There were other Jamaican favourites including pastries, roast corn, patties, festival and bammy.

The entertainment package was just as palatable. New York-based singer Ed Robinson, D Major, Etana, and Mr Vegas all gave outstanding performances.

British singer Maxi Priest maintained that momentum by closing the festival on a high, going through his repertoire of hits including Close to You, Just a Little Bit Longer, Wild World and House Call.

A pop-up exhibition mounted by sponsors VP Records detailed the reggae label’s 35-year history. It drew a steady stream of visitors who viewed memorabilia as well as photos of top reggae acts by photographer Marlon ‘Ajamu’ Myrie.

The Florida edition of the festival takes place November 9 at Markham Park.
