- Rockola

"9th Annual Film/TV/Multimedia Song Vox Pop Winner"

HOMEBASE/COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Madrid, Spain

WHICH MUSIC GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Specialty soundtracks, but I compose Blues and Rock music, too.

ARTISTS ON THIS TRACK: I’m the composer and producer of the track.

IS IT ALSO ON AN ALBUM – IF SO, WHAT IS THE TITLE?This song is on an album Called Score -O- Rama, which is for sale on iTunes.

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? I think this theme is one of the most emotive songs I’ve ever composed. I thought it was a great song to present to the IMAs.

WHERE WAS THIS SONG USED? This song was used on a “Virtual Reconstruction” with 3D graphics of a Spain Church.

WAS THIS TRACK WRITTEN SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT PROJECT? Yes.

WHICH DIRECTORS DO YOU THINK HAVE THE BEST ‘EAR’? The ones who can appreciate the emotional sense of the music with the images, and those who knows what kind of music they want for their projects. Those who can communicate the composer what they really want.

WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? I think the chorale that sounds in this theme is the strong part of the song. It´s a dialogue between the Chorale and the oboe. The Chorale is all made with my computer (it is not a real chorale).

DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT?No.

DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE: My audience is people who likes soundtracks.

WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE?They have a strong music sensibility.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY?Pubs and nightclubs.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BANDS’ MOST EXCITING MOMENT TO DATE? Winning my first contest (The 16th Billboard Song Contest) and when I was nominee for the Hollywood Music Awards. I traveled from Spain to California to be present in the gala.

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010?:Compose the soundtrack for a video game called “The Long Silence.” It´ll be an epic soundtrack.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Devote your life to do what you like.

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS?Traditional Russian Music/. - Independent Music Awards

"Eduardo shares his thoughts on composing and working with other musicians"

1. Can you describe how you compose your music/songs?

It depends on the music I'm going to compose...
If I compose a song for me, first, I select a theme to compose. Then I try to imagine some images in my mind about what kind of music represents them....and finally, I try to put music for those images...
When someone gives me images (videogames, movies, etc...). the process is different. I listen to a lot of music about the ambience of the game, or the movie and I get ideas from that music to start composing.

2. Do you collaborate with other songwriters, lyricists or composers?

Yes, actually I´m collaborating with Ariel Queupumil to arrange some of his themes, but generally I work alone

3. Who is your favorite composer? What did you learn from him?

I´ve got a lot of favorite composers, but if I must choose one of them, I choose John Williams. It´s incredible the way he describes images with his music. He´s a great composer and all his music is an inspiration for me. I´m trying to learn the way he orchestrate his themes (It´s not easy) and the way he use the orchestra to describe the different situations for a movie.

4. How did you write your winning music? Did the melody come first or the background music?

First it´s the melody, and then the orchestration, but in the winning music there are two melodies. The song calls "Gods & Mortals" and there´s a melody for the Gods (Chorale) and another melody for the mortals (Oboe).

5. Can you describe the collaboration with other writers and producers?

I´m always trying to discover new things when I´m composing music. I am constantly learning new things to incorporate into my music, so.my collaboration with other composers is based on the exchange of musical ideas.

6. Can you tell us about your music college experience? Do you take anything positive from that experience?

I started to learn music when I was 8 years old, but I was too booooored, so when I was 10 years old I left my musical studies.
When I was 18 I told my parents that I wanted to be a musician (I´ll never forget their faces...hehehe), and they said..."ok...music and another thing". So, I started studying musical school teaching but my real dream was to be a great musician. I started learning music by my own and listening a lot of music, trying to imitate the great composers with my Midi files. I started to learn viola and solfeo at the same time, but my teachers were musicians....not teachers, and they didn´t know how to teach me the things I wanted to know. So it was too hard for me to learn music and all the things I know about composition and orchestración I learned by myself. Anyway I knew a lot of people with great ideas and talent that helped me to improve

7. Have you won other song contests other than USA Songwriting Competition?

Yes, I´ve won :
- Winner on the "100% Music Songwriting Contest" on the "Soundtracks, TV, Video games" category
- Nominee for the "Hollywood Music Awards" on 2 categories: "Best New Composer" and "Best Instrumental Music"
- Nominee for the "19th Annual L.A. Music Awards"

8. I see Ariel Queupumil is from your country (Spain), he won 1st prize in the Latin category the same year you did. Have you collaborated with him? If so, how did you collaborate?

Due to the contest, Ariel called me because he was making a web page for musicians called MyHitplace...a great place to put in contact producers and musicians. He told me about the page and the possibility to upload my music. I know Ariel´s music (he´s a great composer) and we talked about making music together...He´ll compose the music and I´ll make the arrangements.

9. What advice would you give to other up-and-coming composer or songwriter out there?

Well...the first advice is Don´t give up!!! This is a slow process and you must be patient. Don´t stop making music and try to contact with everybody in the media/music industry. If you persevere, you´ll see the results of your work ;) - USA Songwriting Competition
