"Miami hip-hop artist E. Grizzly, was inspired by the storms of 2005"

These five songs by local artists will sock you like a hurricane

By Colleen Dougher
City Link Metromix

“The Black Cloud,” by Miami hip-hop artist E. Grizzly, was inspired by the storms of 2005, particularly Hurricane Wilma. After that storm, the rapper didn’t have electricity for weeks. The print company where he works as an art director also remained powerless, so he had no income. “Tough times,” E. Grizzly recalls, “but at the end we all pulled through and got stronger from it.” The song, which opens with storm sounds and is a testament to surviving those dark weeks, hints at deeper and more troubling thoughts that surface when a person is living with no lights, cold showers and too much time to think. Produced by Level, the singer for Miami rock band AluKarD, “The Black Cloud” will be released in November on Grizzly’s solo album "The Revolution Will Be Televised." "Cornerstone Reunion"

The Stone That the Builder Refused

The Cornerstoners are back to bring you culture.
BY PATRICE ELIZABETH GRELL YURSIK

After their communal performance venue got shut down, it seemed the Cornerstoners, local hip-hoppers/Latin rockers with talent and energy to burn, would go the way of many a Miami band -- that is, split up and fade into oblivion, leaving fans to reminisce about them over blunts and beers. No such luck, homies. On their MySpace page, the group members boast, "We don't die; we multiply." And they've done just that by creating their own promotions groups, printing their own flyers, booking their own venues, and taking the scene into their own hands. Gotta give them props for keeping the dream alive.

Their promotions outfit, A-HA Events, stands for Artists Helping Artists, and tonight at the Arts & Mind Center, there'll be a whole lot of that going on. Culture in the City is presenting a Cornerstoners reunion that will feature the original core group of MCs -- E. Grizzly, Michelangelo, Lydian, and Victor -- and present their music, poetry, and artistic creativity for those who remember the good ol' days as well as those who have never before experienced their particular cultural fusion. The reunion begins at 7:30.

Call 305-752-9595, or visit www.cultureinthecity.org for more event information, and check out www.myspace.com/thecornerstoners to keep up with the band's latest happenings. - The Miami New Times/Village Voice Media, Inc.

Bio

Erik Grizzly, a son of Puerto Rican immigrants writes and performs music for those who miss the days of Hip-Hop’s golden age when the music reflected an artists’ passion for freedom of expression.

His being a native of Pennsylvania, U.S.A, living in Miami, Florida since 2003, along with being of Hispanic descent lends to the diversity of E. Grizzly’s music and lyricism.

Writing and performing professionally since the age of 14 has allowed him to develop a repertoire and stage show which has brought him many solid opportunities such as recording contract offers from Philadelphia independent label, “A-Type Tactiks Records” and “Sony Records, Europe”.

E. Grizzly's quest for true artistic control over his music has prevented him from accepting those and other offers which didn’t grant him the amount of control over his career that so many artists seek.

His decision to remain an independent artist of course has had its drawbacks as well as its rewards. His second EP entitled “Hip-Hop is Dead", brought him notoriety in the form of being awarded the 2006 Independent Rap Artist of the Year Award at the 16th annual L.A. Music Awards. This album also was nominated for Best Breakthrough Album of the year by the same. Unfortunately that year he also was the subject of a trademark infringement case brought to him by Sony Studios/Def Jam Records on behalf of an artist named “Nas”, who also had a release in 2006 titled, "Hip-Hop is Dead", in a case which was still pending in 2008.

His 2003 EP, “Anti-Matter”, which showcased his gangster-rap style eventually led to Erik Grizzly becoming a sort of underground legend among the global underground hip-hop community and has even landed him an appearance on MTV2 television featuring his composition for the 2007 Martin Luther King, Black History Month Tribute.
E. Grizzly is currently working on his 3rd independent release titled, “The Revolution Will Be Televised” which he plans on making available to the public in 2009.
