"Eidman Hall’s fusion of styles to take stage in McAllen"

Eidman Hall’s fusion of styles to take stage in McAllen

When dimple-cheeked Eidman Hall vocalist Christopher Garcia sings, “you walk in a crowded room and I only have eyes for you” — all the girls in the room go silent and gravitate toward the stage.
A few of them twirl their hair and others offer to bring the boys of Eidman Hall coffee between sets.
The band was once named Evolution, but the members worried about copyright infringements, so they changed the name to Eidman Hall, a building on the University of Texas-Brownsville campus where they all met.
“We’ve always known we’d have to change our name. We thought about possible names for a long time, and we decided that was a good name for us. It’s the place where we all got together and started writing. It seemed like a good fit,” said saxophone player Xavier Gonzalez.
Last spring, Eidman Hall opened for Lionel Ritchie. This summer, Eidman Hall recorded a self-titled and full-length album inside a home studio in Brownsville. The album is currently untitled. They recorded the album with hope that the band’s signature dreamy, love-sick lyrics drift into the ears of those not plugged into their regular gigs at coffee shops between Mission and Brownsville.
Tonight, they’ll play Art Awakenings and unleash some other news about their future.
They plan to move to Austin in September.
“We have done auditions and we decided to go up there. There are more opportunities for a band like us. You can play every night of the week,” Garcia said
Eidman Hall’s founding members Garcia and guitarist Eddie Hernandez met at The University of Texas-Brownsville and began to collaborate for talent shows. Gonzalez and drummer Robert Reyes, also UT-B students at the time, soon joined the band.
Eidman Hall combines elements of jazz, R&B, classical and pop music. Each member brought some of his own material to the band, and let it meld with the work of the others.
“We all listen to a lot of music. This is a fusion of our own sound. We are not just rock or just metal,” said Gonzalez. “We stay true to ourselves. What draws people in is when they hear us. We are original but we sound familiar.”
The familiar aspect is the band’s regular comparison to The Dave Matthews Band and John Mayer.
While the comparison is flattering, the members agree that they are pushing their own ideas and staying away from the trap of becoming a clone band.
During the last couple of years, Reyes, Garcia, Hernandez and Gonzalez agree that they have become stronger musicians within the framework of a four-piece, and they found a performing niche in coffeehouses from Brownsville to Mission.
Two of the songs the band predicts will be standout hits are “Crowded Room” and “Something About You.”
“We want to take it as far as we can. Each one of us loves what we do,” said Gonzalez before a set at Jitterz. “We believe in ourselves, we believe in our music and we see this as a career and not a hobby.”

Bio

From the depths of beautiful South Texas comes EIDMAN HALL, a Rio Grande Valley based band who has made quite a name for themselves in a short amount of time. Formed in the fall of 2003 by Christopher Garcia (Vocals) and Eddie Hernandez (Guitar), EIDMAN HALL (then known as Evolution) starting earning the respect of listeners by performing at local talent shows and events at their school, The University of Texas at Brownsville. After a few weeks of writing and performing together, the duo decided to expand their sound and look for a piano player. They then found Xavier Gonzalez(Saxophone/Keyboards). After hearing the tunes that Chris and Eddie had written, Xavier agreed to come to one of their Tuesday/Thursday rehearsals. Originally, Xavier was only supposed to play piano. But since his main instrument was the saxophone, he decided to bring it along just in case. That first rehearsal as a trio started what would be the band's amazing signature acoustic sound. That night produced the band's first fully arranged songs, LOVE, TOMORROW, LIKE NO ONE ELSE, and LONELY HEART. It really wasn't your everyday band set-up. For quite some time the instrumentation consisted of vocals, acoustic guitar, and saxophone. Around Christmas time of that year (2003), the group again decided to expand and found Robert Reyes (Drums/Percussion/Vocals). Robert added the missing link to the groups unique sound. Before hooking up with fellow music major Santiago Castillo (Bass), the band spent almost two and a half years as an acoustic quartet. They played everywhere from weddings to fine dining establishments. However, after adding Chago on bass, the band was able to expand their sound, writing, and most importantly, expand the number of venues they could perform at. The band is currently playing consistently throughout the South Texas music circuit in cities such as Harlingen, McAllen, and Brownsville. They have also performed in other cities including, South Padre Island and Austin. Later this Fall (2006) EIDMAN HALL will travel to Tempe, Arizona to record a new EP that is to be produced by Robin Wilson, lead singer of the Gin Blossoms.
