"Song Review: Eion And Kendra – “Timeless”"

So, before we get right into the review I thought I’d share the origins of this track as it’s a remix. Well… a remix of a remix. This song started as the orchestral piece “Time” by Hans Zimmer (from the Inception soundtrack) which was then remixed by Satellite Empire which basically added dubstep-esque drums, some synths and female vocals over the original. This track then builds on that, borrowing some of the lyrics and putting more emphasis on an upbeat electronic sound instead of sampling Hans’ version.
Well, now you know how this track came to be, let’s get onto the critique, starting with the vocals. Now there are two vocalists on this track and both of them suit the style and subject matter of the track well. There seems to be a good amount of personality and emotion projected through the vocals which is always nice to hear. Talent wise I feel that the female vocals outshine the male ones somewhat, which makes some of the harmonisation sound a little off, though most of it is quite enjoyable and the two vocal tracks generally complement each other.
Lyrically I find the song a bit strange. The line “And I’m lost in this timeless without you” doesn’t really make all that much sense. Are they using “timeless” as a noun? Do they mean timelessness? Honestly I’m really not sure, though I could just be missing something. The more I read into the lyrics the less I can make sense of them. There’s a reference to H. G. Wells’ “The Time Machine” though I’m not completely sure if that’s what the song is entirely about. In short I feel like they fail to mesh together well, however, I don’t like focusing too much on lyrics because they might mean a whole lot to someone else and also lyrics don’t typically “make or break” a song (unless it’s rap I guess, though there are a few artists out there who seem to be trying to prove that wrong).
The production quality of the track is reasonably high. The vocals are recorded clearly, nothing is distorted or clipping. I can turn the volume right up and not hear any glaring issues. I really like all the vocal splicing, it’s really well done and isn’t too loud in the mix. Mixing as a whole is fairly solid. I think at some points the vocals may be too loud particularly when both the vocal tracks overlap. The drum track could also be a bit louder, maybe with a kick that has a bit more of an impact. The instruments used are all really well made/chosen, there’s nothing overly fancy, but the main oscillating bitcrush sounding bassline really carries everything nicely and the lead synth is punchy without distracting too much from the vocals.
Overall this is a solid track. I think its biggest downfall, ignoring the lyrics is probably the fact that the melody is incredibly repetitive which makes it somewhat monotonous to listen to toward the end, though I guess this does follow its source material as Zimmer’s “Time” pretty much just builds up the one melody. It’s an interesting take on a great piece and I think as a whole is enjoyable for a couple listen throughs - I Probably Hate Your Band
