Eisenhower

De seventies en de nineties zijn helemaal terug als het aan de Groningense formatie Eisenhower ligt. De gitarist en de drummer speelden jarenlang bombastische progressieve rock in Orpheo, maar gooiden begin 2008 het roer om richting zeventiger jaren rock en negentiger jaren stonerrock. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Wolfmother en Audioslave zijn dan ook nooit ver weg bij de tot viertal uitgegroeide band. Het tempo ligt in het midden en laat iedereen ruimschoots de ruimte om hier en daar met verbluffend sterke instrumentale uitstapjes te komen. Mooi dat daar de tijd voor genomen wordt, het zorgt in ieder geval voor spannende breaks en pakkende momenten. Wat Eisenhower voor heeft op de meeste bands is het feit dat er vaak met maar liefst vier stemmen gezongen wordt en nog goed ook. - FRET Magazine

The seventies and nineties are back, as far as Eisenhower is concerned. The guitar player and drummer had been playing progressive rock for years in the band Orpheo, when they decided to go in a different musical direction in early 2008, and landed on seventies rock and nineties stonerrock. Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Wolfmother and Audioslave are never a long way from the sound of this now fourheaded band. The band’s music leaves enough space for every member to come up with astonishing instrumental bits. It’s good to see that the time is taken, and it sure makes for some exciting breaks and catchy moments. A big plus Eisenhower has in store is that there are often as much as four vocals, and good ones at that. - FRET Magazine

Eisenhower is a formation from Groningen that won the Red Ears Festival Contest because of 'the combination of raw rootsrock with four piece vocal harmonies', as the jury put it. The reward was two days of studio recording time, which resulted in this three-track EP. Opening song "Time the Time" shows that this band does indeed have something special. Musically speaking, this song is a bit like the Queens Of The Stone Age, but the harmonies make it something special. The band itself claims influences from bands like Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Wolfmother, The Parlor Mob and Tool. These are seventies hardrock roots, and you can hear that. There is a factor though that the before mentioned bands show less of and that factor is of great importance in Eisenhower. For the guitars may be mixed in nice and heavy, the last two songs, "The New Guy" and "Eclipse" show an irresistable poppy edge. Each song has something to break the canvas, like a bobbing bass line or a vocal harmony. A lot of time was taken for the mixing and mastering process, and that shows. Eisenhower is een Groningse formatie die het Rooie Oortjes Festival won vanwege ´de combinatie van rauwe rootsrock met vierstemmige vocale harmonieën´, zoals de jury het verwoordde. De prijs bestond uit twee dagen studiotijd, wat deze EP met drie songs opleverde. Opener "Time The Time" laat al horen dat deze band inderdaad iets bijzonders in handen heeft. Muzikaal hangt dit nummer zo nu en dan dicht tegen Queens Of The Stone Age aan, maar de harmonieën maken er iets speciaals van. Zelf noemen ze invloeden als Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, Wolfmother, The Parlor Mob en Tool. De wortels liggen dus in de seventies hardrock en dat is te horen. Toch is er een factor die voorgaande bands minder hebben die bij Eisenhower van groot belang is. Want de gitaren mogen dan wel lekker stevig in de mix zitten, met name de laatste twee songs, "The New Guy" en "Eclipse" hebben een onweerstaanbaar poppy randje. Elk van de songs heeft er iets inzitten dat het stramien even doorbreekt, zoals een lekker naar voren huppelend basloopje of een koortje. Voor de mix en mastering is veel tijd genomen en dat hoor je eraan af. Deze Groningers leveren daarmee een EP af die naar meer doet verlangen. Voor maar drie euro is ´ie de jouwe. - FileUnder

Named after liberating general and later American president Dwight D. Eisenhower, this quartet from Groningen goes into battle under the banner “let’s put the rock back into roll!”. And it sure is solid, pre-Gulfwar rock the band brings. Inspiration comes from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin and Uriah Heep, combined with Wolfmother and Audioslave.
Especially the second song, The New Guy, draws quite a bit from the first Black Sabbath LP. What stands out is the vocal harmonies, that climax in the closing song Eclipse, where especially the chorus is phenomenal. The riffs aren’t always as original, could be the critical footnote. But it is clear that these are well-contemplated arrangements, and every emphasis, every guitar bit and every vocal is in exactly the right place

Genoemd naar bevrijdingsgeneraal en latere Amerikaanse president Dwight D. Eisenhower, trekt dit Groningse viertal ten strijde onder de leuze ‘let’s put the rock back into roll!’. En het is dan ook degelijke, voor-Golfoorlogse rock wat de band ten gehore brengt. Onder meer Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin en Uriah Heep vormen de inspiratie, aangevuld met Wolfmother en Audioslave.

Vooral het tweede nummer The New Guy put nogal uit de eerste elpee van Black Sabbath. De band valt verder op door de meerstemmige vocalen, die hun hoogtepunt bereiken in het afsluitende Eclipse, waarbij vooral het refrein fenomenaal is. De riffs zijn meestal niet al te origineel, dus dat werkt dan weer tegen de band. Maar er is hoorbaar over de arrangementen nagedacht en elk accent, elke gitaaraanslag en elke zangstem zit op de juiste plaats. - Daan de Mooy (LiveXS)
