"Evolutionary Jazz"

Can a computer play jazz? And can it teach itself to play better and better jazz?
The EJI Group uses jazz harmonies and improvisations built by means of evolutionary algorithms based on Charles Darwin's evolution theory.
Some tunes are played by the acoustic jazz group, and some by a mix of computer instruments and Kjell Bäckman's acoustic piano. - Kjell Bäckman

Bio

The new thing about this type of jazz is the harmony system, which is function-less, i.e. no specific base note and not necessarily based on the major/minor concept. The tune themes are created by computer programmed algorithms. The computer can also play an improvised solo. The harmonies and improvisations are created based on evolutionary principles, where the evaluation of the individuals is automatically made by the computer.
