"Singles reviews Drum Media #932"

ELANA STONE
Slippery Slidey
Independent

Forget everything you might have thought you knew about Elana Stone. She might have won awards galore a couple of years ago as something of a jazz diva but here, Stone has let out her inner rock banshee, at least on the title track. Then again, there’s the country rock coquette on White Heart and the gently plaintive balladeer on Psychik Mecanik. It’s obvious that Stone isn’t going to allow her muse to be constrained by anyone’s preconceptions of what or what she can write or sing. And more power to her. Enjoy the journey.

"AUSTRALIAN STAGE ONLINE"

Raw, soulful, and uplifting Elana Stone and her band present a powerful combination of skillful musicianship, a commanding stage presense and damn good songwriting. 'I didn't know what to expect from this band, billed, variously, as jazz, experimental and indie. Fact is, it's all of those. And more. - AUSTRALIAN STAGE ONLINE

Genre-busting singer and Triple J Next Crop artist ELANA STONE (Jackson Jackson, Hermitude), returns from a victory at Rockwiz to launch her new album ‘Your Anniversary’.

The Elana Stone band has a story that could melt your heart. It begins with 4 best friends. They become embroiled in a Fleetwood Mac - style subplot that culminates in marriage and betrayal. But the chain kept them together and they rejoined to make their best work yet on the soon to be released album.

Elana’s songwriting centres around her powerful, flexible voice, which ranges from blazing, Janis Joplin style soul, rock and roll, and Joni Mitchell-esque piano balladry.
Aaron Flower's (Vince Jones) lyrical guitar work gives the sound a heart wrenchingly beautiful quality. Zoe Hauptmann's (Coda, King Curly) bass playing and backing vocals are like a wild prodigal child at play, while Evan Mannell (Bertie Blackman, Faker) purges and purifies inner demons with his astonishingly creative drumming.

Elana and her band have toured Europe on an extremely tight budget, sleeping on wet towels in people's backyards for accommodation. They have appeared at festivals around Australia including the Perth International Arts Festival, The Sydney Festival, Melbourne International and Fringe Festivals. They have supported such artists as Holly Throsby, Bluejuice and Kate Miller-Heidke. Last year, Elana was headhunted by Australian rock icon Deborah Conway and toured Australia with 'Broad,' the acclaimed all female singer-songwriter extravaganza.

Your Anniversary is a triumphant combination of great song writing and brilliant musicianship. The first single ‘Slippery Slidey’ received high rotation on Triple J. Their upcoming single ‘New Life’ is about to be released, accompanied by a wonderfully epileptic video clip.

“Fascinating. Like a pretty in pink female Thor with her musical hammer and beautiful roar” – Aaron
