"They Came From South Florida!"

by T.M. Shine
Posted June 8 2005

With a presence as powerful as that of Coldplay, eL captivated the crowd at this year's SunFest when it preceded Billy Idol on the main stage. "Where are they from?" everyone in the crowd was asking, including some A and R reps. The answer is: right here in West Palm Beach.

"Best Male Rock Vocalist of 2005"

Jeremy Clark of El

It takes more than silver-plated pipes or a bloodcurdling scream to really soar as a rock singer. If you're going to make your listeners feel anything deeper than horny or pissed-off, you gotta have a sense of subtlety and a range of vocal expression. Listen to El's self-titled 2004 release and you'll hear vocalist and guitarist Jeremy Clark stagger through longing, float with elation, and simmer in regret, all while maintaining a sense of earnest vulnerability that helps make this Lake Worth band one of South Florida's best. Growing up in Bogotá, Colombia, gave Clark a unique inflection and worldly musical sense that comes through in the band's sophisticated yet simple songwriting. The trio is currently working on a new album that will combine Clark's Latin leanings with European influences like the Cardigans, U2, and Radiohead. With Clark at the helm, you can be sure the music will take you places.

"Hot off the CD-R"

El by El: The debut album by West Palm Beach-based El reveals why so much local buzz has been heaped on the group and why it may be the best thing to come out of West Palm Beach since … hmmm … I'll have to get back to you on that. Anyway, singer-guitarist Jeremy Clark proves to have an ear for a catchy tune and a thoughtful lyric, and from the moment the drums and bass kick in on opener "Stars (Fall From Your Eyes)," you'll realize why this trio has generated, deservedly so, the attention it has.

UNDERBELLY / Local & Indie Music

BY RENE ALVAREZ

Britpoppers El push the right buttons; dripping with urgency and anthemic in its musical scope, this West Palm Beach band would sound at home in a stadium setting. - Street Weekly

"The Deeper Side of eL"

Their Name’s A Bit Strange, But There’s No
Misunderstanding The Sound – EL Is Here
To Rock Your Ass!

By Larry Boytano

Whatever their inspiration, eL produces tunes that have a universal rock appeal. If you like rock, you’ll be attracted to ditties like the lead song, "Stars" (fall from your eyes). It features a quick, driving rhythm, a wall of guitars, and a catchy chorus. The various inflections Clark uses in his dynamic soprano draws listeners into the finer nuances of a tune. The final package lies in the alt rock field, right between Radiohead and U2. - Closer Magazine

"Serious Tunage"

It's eL-ementary

FRI 11/19

Finally. Lake Worth is no longer just another town to pass on the way to West Palm Beach. Now that local bands like eL have taken to Brogue's Irish Pub (621 Lake Ave.), the city has more to boast of than street painting and social protests. If you're not familiar with eL, listen up, 'cause this band knows how to write a tune. Sure, you can call it indie rock, but only in the broadest sense; eL employs far more hooks and rhythmic changes than the Ambien-fueled stuff of less inspired bands. There's a near equal emphasis on the tunage and the rockage -- and with none of the pretensions of the bedhead crowd. Think U2 meets Coldplay -- cranked up to 10.

Bio

eL is a four-piece band that has been playing original melodic rock, infused with a Brit-pop influence, for over six years for local, national and international audiences. This South Florida-based indie act is characterized by outstanding vocals, driving rhythms and memorable hooks, and consistently delivers an energetic live performance. Singer/songwriter Jeremy Clark founded the band under the name Vinyl in 1997 and released a five-song EP shortly thereafter. The follow-up album, “Here We Are Again,” earned Clark industry recognition when he won the GMA Songwriter of the Year Award in 1999 for the album’s title track. In 2003, the band recorded their first full-length, self-titled album in Nashville at the White House studio along the infamous music row. The new 10-song album—produced by Conner, engineered by Jeremy Hunter and mixed by Grammy Award-winning engineer, Charles Dye—showcases the band’s maturing songwriting ability and signature sound. eL recently released the album through their own label, Revolution by Popular Demand Records. In both 2000 and 2002, eL traveled to Europe to headline 10-date tours of Italy and Finland, respectively, and is planning to tour their new album throughout the south- and northeastern U.S. and again in Europe in 2005. This year, the band secured opening spots for national recording artists Local H, Muse, Hot Hot Heat, Presidents of the USA, The Music, Mt Chemical Romance, Our Lady Peace, Taking Back Sunday, The Used, The Explosion, K’s Choice, Seven Mary Three and has performed with indie artists such as Boxelder, The Kick, The Lot Six, Doorway 27 and many more. The Palm Beach Post staff writer Bill Meredith describes eL’s music as “infectious. Originals like It’s All Over and Give Me a Feeling … are at once melodic and muscular, mixing Brit-pop from The Cure to Radiohead and Seattle sounds from Nirvana to Paul Westerberg.” In his weekly “Local Scene” column for the Miami-based Sun Sentinel, Jason Knappel characterized eL’s music as follows: “They partake in the post-Bends era Radiohead scramble for Brit-pop supremacy, but they are distinctly American.”
