"SoundCheck Magazine 6/1/2003"

Musical categories have branched out and diversified so much that “rock” and “pop” are no longer adequate descriptions of style. Rather, elements or pieces of many genres often pull together create a sound and that sound is going to be categorized by some “power-that-be” at a radio station or record label. So along comes a band into the Boston music scene, Elcodrive, a band that one week is in the WBCN Rock ‘n’ Rumble and the next is playing at NBC Studios in New York for a national television news spotlight. They’re a band that is “rock” enough to play the Rumble but commercial-sounding enough to win second place in the Pop/Top 40 category of the International Songwriting Competition. Throw the judgments and categories aside….Elcodrive’s layered rock sound is rooted in rock and blooms into a sound that is accessible, and catchy, and has radio written all over it. So what’s so wrong with that? It’s comfortable, expressive, and sincere. If the path that vocalist/guitarist Mike Golarz (formerly of Something Ira), bassist/keyboardist Tom Smith, guitarist Mike Courcy, and drummer Bill Bassett (all three formerly of Bob’s Day Off) have paved leads to the mainstream and, dare we say Top 40, then great. They’re reaching the masses and after all, isn’t that what most musicians strive for? Check the band out at www.elcodrive.com.

"The Noise"

If you want hooks and killer production, look no further than Elcodrive's debut disc. This band has the talent to propel them to the national level and it appears as if that's exactly where they are headed. "Tonight" kicks it all off with a guitar line that is sure to have you humming along, not knowing exactly why. They write real choruses and melodies that are more than merely memorable. "Overrated" is especially strong and would be my pick for the first single. Mike Golarz possesses an emotionally charged voice and pours his heart and soul into each word that comes from his lips. This band will not change the face of rock - which appears to be fine with them. Songwriting and melody are what they're about; if you have any questions, check out "Reasons," an absolutely beautiful tune, where they are daring is in their unabashed love of the pop song-something other bands could learn from. Extremely polished, but not being devoid of soul-a tough combination to pull off- Elcodrive has done this in spades on this debut disc. Highly recommended. - Shady

"The Metronome"

Tight, Moody compositions, coupled to a slick audio production sets Elcodrive's debut CD 'Somewhere Between Now and Then' apart from the din. Lead singer Mike Golarz has a powerful, emotive voicethat sets these songs ablazewhile his bandmates Bill, Tom and Mike Courcy hold a tight reign on the songs cource. Lots of audio trickery on the guitar tracks provides for plenty of ear candy for the discerning listener. - Doug

GOOD HEAVENS!!!,I got so much new music that some albums lie for some time and I don´t know what kind of treasures that is waiting for me like ELCODRIVE from Massachusetts,USA! This superquartet plays a wonderful mix of Aussierock (Sneak,Taxiride,Inxs),Modern pop(Simple minds,Semisonic ,Kick the kangaroo) and some AOR over it. They are Mike Golarz on Vocals,Bass(formerly with Something Ira)and he´s got a terrific voice that is one my fave´s this year,Mike Courcy-Guitar(with a very english type of style in his playing),Tom Smith-Keyb. (lots of 80´s sounding keyboards) and drummer Bill Bassett(hits you like a hammer, goddamn). The album is produced by Scott Riebling who has worked with Nina Gordon and American Hifi, the sound is mega fluffy and filled with muscles and clearness. I love music when it´s delivered in a major positive sounding package like Elcodrive manage to give us from track one to the eleventh and last, every single one is GREEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAT! Do you like danish dynamite pop like Mom,Saybia,Kick the kangaroo?,well here´s something for you too and if you adore Aussie rock like Jimmy Barnes,Taxiride and Sneak, these guys rock just as good and what to you think of English gentlemen like Simple Minds?!,I can hear lots of vibes from that British island too. Imagine all that performed with AOR feeling and you´ll have "Somewhere between now and then",it starts with "Tonight" that finished 2nd in the Pop top 40 category of the international songwriting competition, put on that song and I will ride any wild horse.... "Black flowers" and "Forever and after" has some INXS harmonies over them but in a more modern rock way. Then there´s a lovely Semisonic kinda pianobased AOR/ pop song called "Decided" that sounds like Bruce Hornsby,Dan Wilson and Jimmy Barnes wrote it together, I can´t sit still to that groove. "Sister sunshine" has probably the best chorus on the album,we´re talking Top 10 song of the year here! but there´s more of that heaven that Elcodrive gives us on their debut...........now get your copy, pronto! - Kaj

Bio

Boston-based Elcodrive is the outcome of four musicians' search for a fulfilling new project. The members -- each enjoying local success in other bands -- believed they had what it took to succeed on the national level. But, they knew they would need to find other musicians of the same caliber to achieve that goal.

Front man Mike Golarz effortlessly belts out some of the catchiest vocal melodies that Boston area music fans have heard in years. Mike's affinity for music styles ranging from heavy metal to jazz are apparent, but his love of rock is evident when listening to his powerful delivery of lyrics drawing from personal experience and reflection on life.

The remainder of the line-up includes Bill Bassett, Mike Courcy, and Tom Smith, who had been courted by labels with their success in Bob's Day Off. WBRU's support of Bob's Day Off spawned a buzz, but unhappy with the direction of the rest of the band, Bill, Mike and Tom went in search of a new path. Tom's versatility and musicianship on both bass and keyboards adds a new dimension to the Elcodrive songs. His musical interaction with his longtime band mate, guitarist Mike Courcy, blends seamlessly to result in extraordinary melodic progressions. Mike Courcy's guitar style and vocal abilities add texture to each song and make him an invaluable part of the group. Ultimately, Bill Bassett's impeccable tempo and sense of rhythm is the glue that holds each arrangement together.
