“Analog heaven” is how respected SugarHill Studios producer Dan Workman described his day in the studio with El Deluxe recording their song “In Our Hands.” In the modern world of digital technology, recording to tape is rare, but embraced by this trio of veteran Houston musicians, Kalani Ordone, Jeff Balke and Frank Bullington. Drawing upon a wide range of rock influences (Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Electric Light Orchestra, Queens of the Stone Age, Soundgarden, Queen), El Deluxe combines a unique brand of loud, guitar-driven rock with a deep and abiding interest in the pursuit of authenticity. In some ways, they are a throwback to rock’s past, yet they sound perfectly at home in the modern music landscape. Their vintage attitude means valuing sonic credibility over technological perfection.
