Bands showcase girl power at Rythm & Brews
Chattanooga GoGirls take stage Thursday

For aspiring female musicians, the road to getting behind the mike can be an uphill climb. To help smooth the transition, Houston’s Madalyn Sklar founded GoGirls, a national organization to support female indie artists.

Thursday, the Chattanooga GoGirls subchapter will host a trio of regional acts of the feminine persuasion with their second musical showcase of the year.

The first showcase held in March was a sellout, and subchapter coordinator Pat Carrillo said the hope is for a strong second outing Thursday at Rhythm & Brews.

Despite the excellent turnout at the inaugural event at Barking Legs Theater, Carrillo said she sees Rhythm & Brews as a step up.

“I’m really happy to have a really good venue like Rhythm & Brews with the right lights and the right system,” she said. “Barking Legs is a great place, but it’s not a pro hall. That’s a lesson learned.”

The show Thursday will feature Nashville-based singer/songwriter Jenn Franklin, local blues/rock band Lumbar Five and Atlanta-based rock outfit Electric Soul, with which Carrillo plays bass.

Bimonthly showcases are planned for the rest of the year with a larger showcase at Midtown Music Hall in the works for the summer. The goal is to spread the word about GoGirls’ free networking potential for any band with a female member.

“(It’s) going to keep growing and growing,” Carrillo said. “I want every girl in the area to know about it.”
