"Album review (French)"

Musiques Elektrip

"What a trip: The eclectic adventures of Elektrip"

It's been a long time coming for Montreal-based duo Elektrip. Lead singer and lyricist Eugene Brotto first met bassist, keyboardist, guitarist, and drummer Simon Estérez 14 years ago. They even played in a band together for a while. Then they went their separate ways, until Brotto received an unexpected phone call from Estérez three years ago. The two reconnected and decided to record an album. Due March 16, the as yet untitled 13-track set was originally slated to be a double-disc release.

"We entertained the thought of launching our first album as a double album, which would have been very pretentious of us," says Brotto with a laugh. "And we were saying, ‘Well, we've got all this great music, why not?' But then for financial reasons we thought, you know what, it might be easier to stick to a single album."

The final project is a delicious blend of traditional and contemporary styles. "It's extremely eclectic, there's tons of fusion, there's all sorts of influences everywhere," explains Brotto. "Myself, I'm sort of bluesy, rock oriented. My influences come from the '60s and '70s. Simon is more on the jazzy side."

While Brotto is chief lyricist and Estérez handles the music, the two really work together to create the band's unique sound, which they describe as a "progressive blend of pop and electro-jazz."

Brotto says the band's goals for 2005 are simple: "Getting signed to a label, getting a booking agent, and getting exposure for the album as far across this planet as we can. I know that might take longer than a year, but if we could fit it all in a year, great."

Elektrip
Reconvene (independent/LOCAL)
On their intriguing debut album, Montreal duo Eugene Brotto and Simon Estérez deliver an eclectic set that’s both energetic and relaxing. Lead vocalist Brotto oscillates between urgent pleas (“A Song for Elliss K.”) and cocksure delusion (“Ambivalence”), supported by a shifting backdrop that moves easily from folk to ambient to pop-rock. The most consistent element, in fact, is the seeming delight the pair take in hop-scotching across an unpredictable musical landscape that includes searing guitar work, jazzy horn play and sweeping strings. Their gutsy rendition of the Allman Brothers’ “Whipping Post” proves that they can cover material as skillfully as they can create it. 8/10 (Gerard Dee)

*** Worth the money

Lingering in the ether between jazz, soul and groove, Elektrip is a Montreal band bent on riding its own airy high. Ambience is emphasized, and while songs occasionally err toward the noodly or overwrought, there are evocative moments to be found by those adventurous enough to lend an ear. Bio

In 2001, Eugene Brotto and Simon Esterez formed Elektrip. Once they fine tuned the material, they took to the stage along with their musical cohorts in 2003. They have played several shows throughout Quebec including Montreal, the Laurentians and the Eastern Townships.

Reading about the Elektrip experience truly does not do it justice. To genuinely feel the resonance of this self proclaimed "live driven band" is to do just that, see them live, up close and personal. Elektrip's performances consist of a colourful balance between intricate arrangements and experimental improvisational play. It get's saucy!!!

The sound of Elektrip consists of rock and groove, with hints of electronic samples. The balance within the group is maintained through the shared expression between a particular vocal articulation and a musical resonance that bleeds improvisational skill throughout the arrangements.

The lyrics that inhabit the songs tell the tales of a human race juggling with their conscience, their lucidity or folly, their love stories or their compelling desire to experience life intensely.

This project is the amalgamation of five distinct individuals, with a singular objective: Creating Good Music!
