A fun and full sounding nine-piece funk and soul band armed with a massive horn section, bluesy bass guitar and everything in between.

Grade: 80

Elemeno Peas can make any rainy day bright as their attitude to the music they play is nothing but rainbows and sunshine. They put on an upbeat show that got the early audience at The Black Bull cheering for more.

Lead singer Andrea Wettstein had the crowd in the palm of her hand. The Black Bull reached maximum capacity during the band's set, which is unusual for an 8 p.m. slot at NXNE.

Musical Analysis

Two words best describe the Elemeno Peas: good times. Funky, soulful and bluesy, the band made it difficult not to like them. They performed classics like "Respect" with ample energy.


Other Skills And Areas Of Interest

The reaction from the audience means the Elemeno Peas have a strong fanbase. Not overly dressed but looking nice, it's evident that they approach their musical career with professionalism and have the drive to take it further than university bars. - chartattack

LMNOPs put on Rockin’ Show

To the Editor:
Last Friday evening, we and several of our friends made our way down to The Spoke to hang out after dinner, and we were amazed by the entertainment we happened to stumble across. The LMNOP’s – We assume composed of Western music students – put on one of the most amazing concerts we had ever seen, rivaling that of most famous acts. They presented a delightful mix of old school funk, jazz, ska and rock, all pleasantly integrated into a first rate performance, highlighted by the professionalism and skill of each individual player. Whether it was an unexpected-yet-incredible drum solo performance of Led Zeppelin’s “Moby Dick” or a full-blown rendition of Earth, Wind and Fire’s “September” with some incredible original material thrown in, they truly blew the crowd away. Talent like the LMNOP’s is rarely seen – not only in indie music circles, but also by many professional musicians – and should be heard by everyone. It’s unfortunate that performances of this caliber are not better publicized, because this is extraordinarily high quality entertainment found right here on campus at no cost at all. Congrats to the LMNOP’s – you put on a hell of a show and we hope to catch the next one.

Say their name out loud and you’ll get it. Sometimes there are live recordings that are infinitely better than live performances (Avril Lavigne, Our Lady Peace) and then there are acts that create such as great live show that recordings pail. The Elemeno Peas are the latter. This ten-piece funk band, made up largely of music students from UWO (with their bio emphatically proclaiming the inclusion of one History major) has chops to spare. I don’t often run across a band that is as universally strong musically as this one. While they pepper their sets with covers like soul standards such as Aretha Franklin’s Respect, the fact that their original stuff is as strong as any of the covers is testimony to their future as a band. The crowd, though perhaps a little sympathetically stacked with music students went nuts over this group, singing along with their originals as well as the old standards. But above anything else, this band just looked like they were having fun and that fun was contagious. Not once did they sacrifice their musicality for a stage gimmick or joke, instead infusing their songs with an overall energy. Their image may need a little work, as the combination of tucked in plaid and rock star among the group members didn’t sit well with me but their overall performance was spectacular. If you get a chance, catch these guys live. They don’t have a CD to recommend but if they did I would, though the tracks on their web page are poorly recorded live recordings that don’t reflect the talent of the band. Their sound and music is fun and a live horn section adds an amazing amount of energy to the act. Overall I’d give them 4 out of 5 with the definite potential for a perfect 5 with a couple of tweaks. - Interrobang (Fanshawe Newspaper, London, ON)
