Bio
Its been a long road for Elijah Henry, the San Francisco native who first began writing music in high school.
However it wasnt until college, while studying theatre arts at U.C. Santa Cruz, that he began to flourish not only as songwriter, but as a versatile artist and entertainer. Being a skilled composer and musician proficient in piano, guitar and bass, and an equally talented designer, Elijah immersed himself in every aspect of his school stage productions. From musical composition to production/costume design and stage performance, he eagerly absorbed everything needed to know involving entertainment on stage and off.
During his third year in college he was invited to come to L.A. after a demo landed in the hands of David Benveniste, manager of one of the biggest rock acts in the world, System of a Down. His decision to leave college was difficult, but, shortly after arriving in L.A., his dreams of a career in music started falling into place. He began performing throughout L.A. and his talent as a live performer and skilled musician gained him instant attention. In a short time, record companies took notice, and A&Rs in attendance at an Elijah Henry show became the norm.
With the buzz ever-growing, Elijah garnered an invite to the house of Quincy Jones for a private solo performance. There, upon a piano graced by the genius hands of Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder, Elijah Henry played and performed for the legendary music mogul.
In 2000, Elijahs self-produced sixteen-song songwriting demo was heard by Leslie Cooney, manager of dancehall great Mr. Vegas. The demo was also heard by Mike Ross, president of Delicious Vinyl Records. Impressed, not only with the young songwriters musical prowess and effortless ability to blend pop/rock and R&B, but also with his soulful voice and creative presence, Delicious Vinyl offered Elijah a recording contract.
Amidst offers from other record companies, Elijah eventually signed his deal with Delicious Vinyl. He seemed to be a good fit for the groundbreaking independent record company that produced the likes of Tone Loc, Young MC, the Brand New Heavies, and Hip-Hop icons The Pharcyde.
However, all was not as it seemed. Though he recorded an albums worth of material for Delicious, Elijahs project was shelved, and in 2003 he and Delicious parted ways. Though he never released that album, his time at the label was not spent in vain.
In 2001 he finished college and earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre Arts. He then went on to collaborate and work with a multitude of talented artists and producers, including leading Latin jazz guitarist Javier Torres Moseley, producers J-Swift, Bob Durham, and Damon Elliot who has produced hits for Destinys Child and Pink. His compositions have been placed in movies and on television, including MTVs debut of Making the Band.
With a vast list of accomplishments and experience under his belt, Elijah Henry returned home to San Francisco. He teamed with local producer Al Wilson, and in 2004 they formed the independent record company Gentlemenz Club Ent. Undeterred, Elijah locked himself in the studio and began writing new songs for his debut album.
Elijah has been compared to the likes of Marvin Gaye, Prince, and Michael Jackson, and, upon hearing him, his influences are obvious. However, for his forthcoming solo debut, aptly named Special, he dug deeper into his wide array of musical influences that includes everything from the Beatles to the Grateful Dead, and John Lee Hooker to Eric Clapton. His love of the song and knowledge of great songwriters like Kenneth Gamble, Leon Huff and Diane Warren further drove Elijah to write and produce songs as timeless as the ones hes so inspired by.
With the completion of his debut album, the accomplished multi-instrumentalist and songwriter is ready to take center stage and deliver his own Special blend of music.
