"Onset of Fflur power"

‘Criminology student Elin Fflur has taken a year out to follow her singing career and her first solo cd is being released on December 2! After early succes with her band Carlotta, Elin’s name sprung tonational prominence after singing the winning entry in 2002’s Can I Gymru competition.
Soon after she joined the ever popular Angelsey-based group Y Moniars and enjoyed succes with them following their first album with Elin as lead singer-harbwr diogel. Her debut solo album , Elin Fflur , derives from personal experiences or the experiences of thos very close to her. And in order to enhance her songs and performance, Elin has teamed up with an experienced and highly talanted production team; Christian Phillips, Rob Reed, and Nigel Hopkins.’

Elin and her band are set to release their first welsh-language album in December on the Caernarfon-based Sain label. Called ‘Dim Gair’ - which translates as speechless- it’s a cd of largley original songs which Fflur describes as having ‘something for everyone’.
The 19 year old from angelsey says, “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do - a solo cd. I’ve recorded other things in the past but this is the first time it feels really like mine. ‘I can’t wait for people to hear it.’ And getting people to hear the album is one of the reasons Elin is putting off her carreer in criminology. ‘I’ve already done a year but I was hardly there with one thing or another.’
‘And then there was the chance of doing the album which I couldn’t turn down as it’s something that’s been a dream of mine since I was small.’
‘I’ve always been surrounded by music.I learnt piano and the flute as a child and my brother Ioan and I were always entering eisteddfodau when we were little.’
‘And then I got to the point where I wanted to do something that was less traditional. So Ioan and I put a band together called Carlotta, where I played the bass guitar and sang. Then Arfon Wyn asked me to sing one of his songs with the band Moniars for the 2002 song for Wales competition which we won, then last year I came runner-up with one of my own songs Llwybr Lawr I’r Dyffryn, in the same competition. And while I was doing it I met the boys who are now in my band.’
With the release of her debut solo album, Elin joins the honourable and honoured legacy of the Welsh singer-song writer. Critics reckon her natural charisma and rich voice could be enough to captivate Welsh-languaged audiences and assure a following in her native country.

"US backer helps Fflur woo World"

A LEADING US record producer is aiming to introduce the talents of a young Welsh singer to the rest of the world.
Kim Fowley, who has produced and co-written albums with Alice Cooper, Helen Reddy, Guns 'n' Roses and Kiss, says 20-year-old Elin Fflur is his favourite female singer today. He is in discussions with her record label over ways to take her Welsh-language CDs to the international market.

Fflur, from Anglesey, put her degree course in criminology on hold to launch her singing career last year. In December she released her first album, Dim Gair, which Fowley obtained after reading a review of it.
Fowley has worked with Shirley Bassey, and in rock, heavy metal, pop and folk.

He described Fflur as "truly world-class" and said she
would not necessarily have to switch from Welsh to English lyrics to appeal to overseas audiences. Fflur is working on her second album, due to be released by Caernarfon-based Sain next month .

"Bestseller"

No, this recording doesn't sound anything like we probably expect a Welsh language CD to sound. No massed choirs, no harps, no druids. Dim Gair ('Speechless') is the rockish solo debut of Elin Fflur, a young, shapely singer-songwriter with carefully blonded hair and long, pale legs - all displayed on the cover. For most of this year, it's topped the chart on Radio Cymru's youth-oriented evening show, C2.

It's on Sain (translation 'sound', and pronunciation 'sign'), a label founded in 1969 by men with big hair, as a home for Welsh politico-hippy rock and folk. It's where Bryn Terfel and Catatonia and Aled Jones first recorded. Until recently, it was run by Plaid Cymru President Dafydd Iwan. Now its Prif Weithredwr (Chief Executive) is Dafydd Roberts. "Elin has broad appeal" says Roberts, a Welsh rocker who was in a band with Elin's mum, "and a strong presence on stage".

An Anglesey girl, Elin first sang in public at three, at an Eisteddfod. "Now I'm 19 and doing my own songs". She's taken a year off from her Criminology degree and moved South to Cardiff.

Bio

‘Elin Fflur’s first solo album shows that the welsh music industry is fully capable of giving young talent a professional platform to express themselves. Production that is polished rather than gritty, and a songwritting team that combines the young Elin Fflur with experienced names makes for an astonishing confident debut. Rock ballads form the backbone of the album, but there is plenty of variety, including lushy orchestrated version of Ar lan y Môr. From amongst the original compositions, it is the pared down folk of tybed Lle mae hi heno? And the portishhead-esque Gwylio Ser y Nos which stand out the most. The album contains something to please most mainstream listeners, and Elin’s rich, versatile voice binds it all toghether well. Pitched towards a mature pop audience, this album is geard to daytime radio.’
