The Eli Wise Band

The Eli Wise Band

BandRock

We are focused on story telling; each of our songs is a short story, encapsulated in music. Restrained lead vocals lead you with tension and beauty, backing vocals create a rich choral comfort, punchy melodic bass keeps you on your toes, driving guitar rhythms guide you to the other side.

Biography

Close your eyes and drop into the scene around you as a short story evolves.
These are the musicians who comprise the band. Eli (lead vocals and guitar) has a history as a street performer and carries that charismatic presence to the stage. His passion grabs your attention; his openness invites you to sit down and stay awhile.
Damon Waitkus (backing vocals, multiple instruments) creates evocative textures that weave through the music. His tenor voice is like light layered on Eli's baritone.
Luke Seldon (bass) creates punchy bass melodies. He combines a great contrapuntal sense with an innate rock drive, resulting in beautiful tense passages.

Guest drummer Jim Kassis has played with artists including Adam Levy, Rinde Eckart, and Rob Berger.
Guest instrumentalist Caroline Penwarden has played with Beth Custer and opened for Fred Frith.

Lyrics

The Ashen Grove

Written By: Eli Wise

And if you die and if you die
You are bound for heaven - I
Know the thorn I know the vine
You are bound for heaven - I

And if you fall and if you fall
Your mother she will gather up
Your body in a rough sewn shroud
And lift you from the ashen grove

She’ll take you to the river down
Wash you in the waters brown
Bury you with wooden crown
And walk with white eyes, earth abounds
But slight, viewed through a veil of heaven’s light

And if you fall and if you fall
Your father he’ll gather all
Your wishes, silver on the ground
And lift them from the ashen grove

He’ll take them up the mountain far
Throw them, as dust to stars
Open arms to heaven’s hearth
A father’s utterings blown apart.

Sacrifice to the Dead

Written By: Eli Wise

Sailing from the west by the light in the fire
Waiting for the boys to drop
Sailing from the west by the light in the fire
Waiting for the wars to start
See you little solider tall against the night sky
Look how the great wheel rocks
See you little soldier your eyes pale like the devil
When you see the great wheel stop

Thrashing through brush through the dust and the darkness
Didn’t know it would be this close
Thrashing through the brush through the dust and the darkness
As we walk half men half ghosts
Say you see a thin line god and the devil pull
Who do you trust the most?
Say you walk a thin line earth, hell, heaven, time
Turn away bled free of remorse

Who will be the sacrifice to the dead?
Who will be the one who remembers?
To tell the stories left behind
Embers to ashes
Drain your glass of wine

Flash back to innocence your girl made little sense
Ready to feel the burn
Flash back to innocence your girl looks a little tense
When all her gifts turn to coal in your hands
Everything is fuel to burn, a fire spin, a war churn
Time to say goodbye
Everything is fuel to burn, a fire spin, a lighting storm
Sighted in the eastern sky

Who will be the sacrifice to the dead?
Who will be the one who remembers?
To tell the stories left behind
Embers to ashes
Drain your glass of wine

Night falls every hour then rushes away
Dreams aren’t for this world I say
Night falls every hour then rushes away
Dreams aren’t for this world.

Living in Your Mind

Written By: Eli Wise

So there’s this really nice girl likes to take you out dancing
And you don’t got much to give but she don’t care about romance
Just thinks your kinda cool,
But after what you had doesn’t her touch seem cruel?

So she calls you up, man it’s so late at night
And you want to hang up, but her voice makes you light
You’d been fine at home figuring out your life
She asks you why do you fight?

You gotta choose which rules can give
And you gotta find which life to live
In love with your memories held in the darkness of solitude
Well it can give enough spark to you
But there’s a tug you can’t deny
Some days you feel more like living than living in your mind.

So you have a few drinks, say you gotta go in
She blocks your path light touch on your skin
Your past struggles in anguish and cries
What does it mean if these years of your life can so easily die?

No no now you don’t understand this is not about giving into grief
The birds will fly and I will keep track of each
In ascetics cold relief, breath drawn in the wake
What does it take?
To get through this without living through all my mistakes.
