Lorsque j’ai commencé à faire de la radio en janvier 2006, ce fut une période de découverte de plusieurs groupes et artistes locaux qui faisaient du brui

Environ quatre ans plus tard, Beyondah et El Cotola ont donné rendez-vous aux fans pour un vrai rassemblement au Patro Vys. Entouré de leurs musiciens et choristes (Abby et Sarah Linhares), le groupe a livré près de deux heures de musique live afin de présenter le nouveau projet, World class buffet. Reconnu pour mélanger le hip-hop, la musique latine et le funk, Metazon offre une réelle expérience musicale qui rappelle l’énergie dégagée lors des passages du mythique groupe de Philadelphie The Roots. Sauf que dans le cas de Metazon c’est le visage et la voix de la métropole qu’on peut ressentir, car on passe de l’anglais au français, de l’espagnol au créole de façon très naturelle et typiquement montréalaise. S’ajoute aux voix, la présence d’un batteur, d’un claviériste, d’un bassiste et même les cuivres et c’est tout un orchestre qui occupe la scène principale.

Lors du lancement nous avons eu droit à ce melting-pot de styles musicaux et des artistes unissant les deux solitudes par leur amour de la culture hip-hop. Un jeune B-boy a même démontré quelques mouvements de breakdancing vers la fin du spectacle. Il ne manquait que du graffiti en direct et on se serait senti dans un bloc party du Bronx. Parmi les moments forts de cette soirée, mentionnons la présence d’invités spéciaux tels que Obia le Chef, Aspect Mendoza ainsi que Paranoize qui a accompagné Abby et Sarah Linhares tout au long du concert. Parlant de Paranoize, la pièce « Against the wall » sur laquelle il collabore avec le groupe a très bien sonné en spectacle tout comme l’excellente chanson « Bring the power back ». Le groupe connaît aussi ses classiques hip-hop. J’avais déjà vu une reprise de la pièce « The world is yours » de Nas interprétée par Metazon, mais j’ai été encore plus surpris d’entendre les covers de Notorious BIG et de Big Pun. Les deux MC de Metazon ont démontré qu’ils avaient du souffle, notamment pour celle de Pun sur laquelle Aspect Mendoza a également amené sa touche franco multisyllabique.


Pour ceux et celles qui n’ont jamais entendu parler de Metazon, je crois que le visionnement du clip « Beat’n the bass » donne un juste aperçu de leur son. Le seul bémol que je crois que les gens pourraient reprocher c’est que le nouvel album est uniquement en anglais. Cependant, à ceux et celles qui ne se limitent pas aux barrières linguistiques, procurez-vous l’album World class buffet ou manifestez vous lors du prochain concert, car l’énergie de Metazon est définitivement présente sur scène! - HHQC.com

Aptly titled and thoughtfully packaged, this debut LP from the local live soul/hip hop outfit delivers the “world” part by weaving contemporary sounds of Latin, African and American funk and jazz into something distinctly Montréalais. The “class” comes courtesy of the musical skill and polish on display here by all five members and guest musicians. And the “buffet,” which offers 12 fine selec­tions, won’t leave you in a bloated, regretful coma on your couch. Have you ever thought of hip-hop as artful karaoke? Karaoke and hip-hop may sound incomparable, but at base level (bear with me here) they are pretty similar: a DJ spins an instrumental and someone grabs the mic to spit some stuff. Most people don’t take karaoke seriously because, for these reasons, it stinks of unoriginal mimicry and corniness. So where does hip-hop (obviously) depart?
Even though their musical formulas are the same, karaoke is lame and hip-hop is fresh because the emcee brings a unique energy and liveness to the stage, feeding off the DJ in a feedback loop. This classic MC/DJ combo served well as the standard hip-hop set-up, until a crop of art-school nerds who eventually became The Roots started to experiment with live instrumentation not only on their records but for their shows. Their live paradigm, which at the time of Organix was weird, has more than picked up, and with good reason. It doesn’t take more than four minutes at a Roots show to realize they offer the most energetic live hip-hop show going because of the real-time musicians putting their sweat and tears in on stage. Liveness is a vibe- thing in music. And it’s a human thing.
Yet when listening to The Roots and other live-oriented hip-hoppers like J Dilla or Black Milk, these productions still sound sample-based, because, well, they are: these “hybird” productions combine samples with live tracks of truncated phrases and repetitious riffs that suggest looping. These arrangements keep the tradition of the DJ in hip-hop alive, while creating new ones.
So what happens when a hip-hop production is rid of samples altogether? Montreal’s METAZON. Instead of recalling the genre roots of hip-hop though records, Metazon creates new sounds altogether with original compositions in the Funk-Jazz-Fusion, Latin Music and Afro traditions. Everything you hear is live, zero sampling. In case you’re a traditionalist, don’t worry: even with all of the styles and live sounds flying around in their music, it only takes a second of the “chk 1-2-1-2? chorus to realize Metazon is first and foremost hip-hop, just a different chapter of it.
