With my art and my music, I tell stories. Some of these stories are issue-oriented, others are deeply character-driven. My singer-songwriter work is acoustic - either me & guitar or piano.

Tragedy

Written By: Elsa M. Lankford

Turn the pages somewhat slowly
they are aged like us and only
have a little while to be here in one piece

They tell the story of a place
once filled with glory, love, and grace
now scarred beyond recognition, hated & defaced

I know that this is a tragedy
but why are there only a few who see
The future is clear and it’s killing me
and you... to be part of this

We hid away from reality
Too weak to say, too scared to see
Stealing your futures and saving them as memories

One day soon you will inherit
this old book and you must share it
Do not hold it quite as tight as we have done

Chorus

I know it’s hard for you to believe
how it all started, and how we leave it
for you, all the damage left for you to clean

Now this tome I lay in your hands
My time’s near done, so is the land’s
The fight is yours to fight. Stand up or be damned

Inspiration:
This song was inspired by our use or misuse of land. My grandmother's farm had recently been sold to a developer to build McMansions and extend sprawl.

This song takes the viewpoint of an observer who allowed the sprawl and the destruction of land to continue, and urges the listener to do more.

Can You Hear Me

Written By: Elsa M. Lankford

This is my fault again
I won’t even question it
I was going through the wrong door
To the right exit

Can you hear me?
I’m knocking down this door
I’m tired of tiptoeing around
and silence on the floor

This won’t be my last stand
Even if that’s how I planned it
I can see the forest
But I think I’m on the wrong planet

Can you hear me?
I’m knocking down the door
I’m tired of tiptoeing around
And silence ever more

I’m tired of being angry
At myself and at the TV screen
Yelling at the small people
Doesn’t seem to provide relief

I will be quiet now
My throat is sore and I am weeping
I didn’t even make a difference
All alone with my screaming

Can you hear me?
I’m yelling at your door
I’m tired of the silence
Never more.....

Stories Left to Tell

Written By: Elsa M. Lankford

I’ve got stories left to tell
and no round to listen

I am to blame for sure it’s me
I have cut all my ties and my belongings

Silence was a good, good friend
but it can’t help me out once I have fallen

I’ve got stories left to tell
and no round to listen

I should have known when word got out
that my blood and my life are all poison

Sympathy is not what I need
please don’t come to my side just for your conscience

I’ve got stories left to tell
and no round to listen

I’ve got stories left to tell
Why won’t you listen?

Inspiration:
As a storyteller, the stories must be told. But what if there is nobody who can hear them, and it is the fault of the storyteller him or herself.

Set List

Until now, I have not played live as often as I would like to. I love playing in front of a live audience, there's an energy, and my vocal range somehow increases. Live, I can sing like I can't in the studio.

Typically, I play 2 or 3 of my own songs, because it's normally an open mic night.
