"Local Singer Makes Her Mark -- Emerald Doyle creates music from the heart"

"Those things cannot be real." Emerald Doyle's electrically luminous emerald green eyes have the effect of stoplights. "you know, people have even stopped me on the street to ask me that," laughs Doyle, with a sly downward glance, adding, "That's why I chose the name Emerald." The Sudbury native relocated to Toronto three years ago to pursue post-secondary education, but has also managed to squeeze in some time to join the city's live music scene. The alternative-pop singer received her Bachelors of Fine ARts with a concentration in music from York University, after a short stint studying gerontology and classical piano at Laurentian University. "I found the word gerontology while flipping through the G's in the course catalogue and thought, 'I can do that!' But after a year or so I realized I'd probably end up scaring an elderly person to death, and the class I was really acing was music," recounted Doyle. Since transferring to York and completing her degree, this solo artist has steadily built up her original repertoire, peppered with a few covers of the Beatles, Tori Amos, and Ben Folds, whose example she follows during live performances: juggling guitar with her more accomplished piano playing. Her distictive style, which meshes a classical background with a twist of jazz and a healthy dose of pop, garnered her a nod from North by North East (she made last year's short list), and a burgeoning following in the local live music scene. Doyle's lyrical content is largely personal, often humorous, and draws on the eclectic characters and situations she encounters day-to-day. During a performance, her energetic patter generally prefaces each tune as she outlines their real life sources. "My songs are based on events that have really touched me somehow, for good or bad," explains Doyle. "it's always a matter of getting it out there before my jaw locks from clenching my teeth over holding it in." "Trailer Park Medusa," for example, tells of a confrontation with a cousin at a family reunion. Desprite that incident, Doyle returns home ofter: "when the big-city is chewing me up and spittin gme all over the sidewalk, I head home for a bit." Her childhood of "get-togethers around the piano," comes out in her live performances, which have the endearing intimacy of a good house party. "you really develop a tough skin with all that time playing solo," relates Doyle, who hones her performance over a year of bi-weekly gigs tickling the ivories at Queen Street West's Gorilla Monsoon. These days, she balances gigs at Toronto's Free TImes Cafe, the Horseshoe Tavern and Cafe May with a job waiting tables at the Left Bank and the production of her first demo, set to be finished in December, Produced by Tim Johns, she hopes to begin shopping it around to record labels in the New Year, and says jokingly, "I'm calling it 'Nothing 10,000 Won't Fix." "I like to say it's the perfect date music," says Doyle. "you can get cozy, enjoy good food and wine, and listen to some great songs."

- Martin Moisan
