"If you can't stand the heat"

By Laura Coates (10/01/07)

Emersons Kitchen are a seasoned bunch of covers and session musicians from Clane. Eoin Greene, Shane O'Riordan and Doug Bermingham have been there, done that and worn the tour t-shirt.

The threesome played together in various combinations in a series of Kildare-based pub bands since the 90s.

Last January, Eoin, Doug and Shane started playing their own stuff together in the kitchen of Eoin's house in Emersons Court in Prosperous. A band was born, and christened after where it was conceived.

The members of the group come from vastly differing musical backgrounds. "I'm a busker at heart," says Shane. Guitarist Eoin is heavily influenced by 80s rock groups such as Heart and Journey while Doug is into crafting tunes and is influenced by the likes of Sting.

Joined in studio last August for a demo track by drummer, Chris Connolly, the foursome have put together some pop rock tunes with a folk feel, focusing on vocal harmonies and melodies.

"When you put all those influences together, you come up with an interesting mix," says Shane.

Yet to play their first live performance, this band of veteran musicians have appeared on KFM's Artyfacts programme last year in a performance that was repeated the following week due to public demand. They also made an appearance on Balcony TV (www.balconytv.com), playing a tiny balcony suspended above Dublin's Dame Street, which Shane says they "watched and cringed..." we decided we had to go into studio and do it properly."

Balancing full-time day jobs, young families and music careers takes some organisation. The band can only rehearse for two-to-three hours a week. Because they're short on time they record everything to focus on what needs to get better.

They're gearing up for their first gig as Emersons Kitchen and are looking for a half-hour/40 minute support slot somewhere. Shane predicts they'll be ready to rock in early February.

Bio

Having spent in excess of 15 years promoting other musicians music through various covers bands, Emerson K got together in early 2006 to discuss developing a few of their own tunes.

Aimed at an over 25's market, Emerson K have been compared to the likes of "The Eagles", "Super Tramp","The Everly Brothers", "The Beatles", "Toto" and even and early "Spandau Ballet".

Coming from different musical backgrounds, one an 80's rock guitar maestro who' s influences include "Journey", "Whitesnake" and "White Lion;" the other a folk and ballad enthusiast who learned to the music of "Paul Simon" and "Christy Moore," together they create a unique and refreshing sound which, while being original, feels like an old trusted friend. With melodies and chord progressions developed through their combined thirty years live gigging experience, they have credibility which gives their music back to the listener.

Every song is different, drawing inspiration from rock, blues, funk, ballads and sometimes country(ish). Emerson K believe in the "good song" irrespective of genre.

Other Information
To date we have recorded a six-track demo CD containing the tracks "Shine", "Home Sweet Homicide", "In Your Arms", "Love Lies", "My Reason" and "Baby Jane". Every track has received substantial airplay on Irish local radio.

On hearing "Baby Jane" played on the radio while on his way to work we were invited into studio by the legendary, Eurovision Songcontest winner, Charlie McGettigan on Shannonside Northern Sound Radio for a studio interview and live performances on his "Saturday Connections" programme.

We have also been interviewed on radio by Marie O’Riordan on Kildare’s KFM "Artyfacts" programme (sharing the honour on the night with Luan Parle) and topped the listeners poll 4 weeks running on WLRFM (Waterfords) Roddie Cleere’s Irish Nightlife MySpace Top 8 with "Baby Jane".
