"Wakeman girl to sing National Anthem"

WAKEMAN — A Wakeman teenager is about to give the performance of a lifetime in front of both houses of Congress.

Emily Keener, 13, will perform the national anthem tonight at the annual Congressional Baseball Game in Nationals Park stadium in Washington, D.C., according to a story in today’s Lorain Morning Journal.
The Congressional Baseball Game is played each summer by members of the United States Congress, with the Republicans on one side and the Democrats on the other team.

Keener will share the spotlight with Kori Caswell, 18, Hannibal, Mo. Both young ladies won top honors in the nationwide “We the People 9*17 Contest.”

Now in its third year, the We the People 9*17 Contest, sponsored by Constituting America, awards scholarships and prizes to students from kindergarten through college and law school for creating original songs, short films, public service announcements, speeches and drawings related to the U.S. Constitution.

The “9*17” date in the contest name refers to the date of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, Sept. 17, 1783.

Keener won for “Best Middle School Song.” Caswell won for “Best High School Song.”

The title of Keener’s winning song is “We the People.” She is the daughter of Jenni and Chris Keener.
Keener, who is home schooled, is currently at work on her third album of original songs, tentatively titled, “Beautiful Day.” - Norwalk Reflector

Bio

Emily Keener is a young blend of Patty Griffin and Alison Krauss. At fourteen years old, her soulful lyrics are beautifully poignant, well beyond her years. In an age of endless pop love songs, her earthy approach is like lemonade on a hot summers day.

She plays her dads old-six string acoustic guitar with a folksy, nostalgic groove, blue-sy chords and finger-picking riffs. Throw in some piano based songs, and she can fill a room with her unique style.

Emily starting playing the guitar when she was 11 years old and started writing songs when she was almost 12. She has over 60 original songs and has released two EPs (short albums) and one full-length album.

In September 2011, she won a national songwriting contest for Constituting America 9*17 for her song We the People. Her winning work will be featured in a documentary, featuring her music video. She performed her winning on song on the Huckabee show on the Fox News Channel with Governor Huckabee and his band The Little Rockers on October 15, 2011.
