INTRODUCING EMILY BAKER

SONGWRITER

Emily’s innate songwriting talent was first spotted when she attended Chris Difford annual songwriting retreat two years running, and made some wonderful companions along the way. Whilst there, she penned tunes with Adam Levy from Norah Jones' Handsome Band and Wales' Amy Wadge, to name but a few. Back in Brighton, Emily co-wrote two songs for Sony/ATV artist Alice Shaw's debut album whilst regular writing sessions with Peer Music's Dee Adam have been consistently productive. Most recently, Emily struck up writing and performing partnership with Dorie Jackson, who not only is a recording artist in her own right but provides inspired backing vocals for the likes of William Topley, Chris Difford and Francis Dunnery.

INFLUENCES

Her songwriting likened to Norah Jones, 'a brunette Laura Marling', Josh Rouse and Ryan Adams; her vocal has the power of KD Lang, the sassy attitude of KT Tunstall yet remains as conversational as Kirsty McColl. Needless to say Emily continues to draw influences from an eclectic range of artists: “It's really all about The Beatles, Carole King and James Taylor with a twist of the bizarre in the production” states Emily, “The perfectionist vision of Jon Brion - who has collaborated with Fiona Apple, Rufus Wainwright and David Byrne –remains a huge inspiration, to this day'.

ARTIST

In November 2006, Emily decided to step out of the shadows of working for other artists, and write and perform her own songs. Since then, she’s earned her reputation the true way, through gigging relentlessly across London and the south coast of England. This has earned her notable several support slots, with Beth Rowley, Wallis Bird, Gabriela Cilmi and Alex Cornish. Back in her home town of Brighton, she took part in the ‘Rock Against Racism’ festival alongside Frank Turner, The Krak and The Thirst. More recently, infamous Baby Shambles front man, and schoolmate, Pete Doherty cited Emily as the person who first influenced him to pick up a guitar. Emily was reunited with Docherty, supporting him at Bournemouth Opera House and Hackney Empire in 2008.

PERFORMER

Live, she delivers passionate storytelling with flashes of eccentricity between songs. Effortlessly melodic and memorable, she never fails to capture and captivate diverse audiences – the driving force being an adherence to a hard work ethic and a deep seated passion for classic songwriting. Her progress to date is testament to an earnest and humble approach to her art. As 2008 draws to a close, Emily is looking to push ahead on all levels, with the prospect of performing at Canada Music Week in March 2009 and steady building her debut album back at her studio in Brighton.
