Bio

Hailing from the back woods and dirt roads of New Hampshire, Emily literally cannot remember a time when she wasn't singing. As a child she took classical voice and piano lessons, but found that she was more drawn to the music of her older sister's 90's-era folk-rock mix tapes than Beethoven and his contemporaries. At the age of twelve, armed with these tapes, a used Vantage, and a determination to learn to play guitar, she taught herself some basic chords. By sixteen, she was performing original folk songs in the monthly concert series at her high school. At eighteen, she conducted a year-long research project entitled The Evolution of American Folk Music. In lieu of writing a paper, she wrote and recorded four original songs (as well as a new twist on the grandaddy of folk music standards, Swing Low Sweet Chariot) on a friend's rusty four track recorder. Almost ten years later, Emily is still playing and singing her own brand of Americana in such famed NYC bars as Arlene's Grocery and Freddy's Bar.

Emily grew up listening to Joan Baez, Linda Rondstat, Bonnie Raitt, Joni Mitchell, Sinead O'Connor, Tori Amos, Ani Difranco and of course, Whitney Houston and Madonna. You can hear these women in her music. You might also hear Hampton Beach, the funeral call of the Ugandan Crested Crane, Walt Whitman, her Grandmother's swing in West Virginia, and a couple of flannel shirts from the Salvation Army.
