"This is the one."

This is the one. This is the CD that makes being a reviewer for The Noise worthwhile. This is the one that makes me forget all the mediocre (or worse) discs that have found their way into my mailbox with T Max’s return address on the envelope. A mature, sophisticated, intelligent, sing-alongable collection of songs performed with passion and bravado, and perfectly produced, Io is a work of art not to be equaled by a local artist anytime in the near future. Emily Grogan is the songwriter that Jewel wishes she could be, that Sarah McLaughlin is generally believed to be by the people that run radio stations like WBOS, perhaps even the songwriter Joni Mitchell once was. She’s that good. She tackles a vast range of topics, from childhood discoveries to the “final drag of your life,” from radiation poisoning to lost opportunities, and from the impossibility of facing another day to the esoteric science of superstring theory---all with a sense of poetic awe and wonder. Musically, she ranges from sensitive folk to ska-influenced pop to boogie-woogie to straight up rock. She’s a top notch guitarist, and has surrounded herself with an impressive and versatile band. This is easily the best local CD of the year so far.

"Further Applause for "Io""

"the opening to “Io” has Emily singing in a way eerily reminiscent of the timbre achieved by both Coheed and Cambria and Linda Perry. “Begin Again”...has a complete, radio-friendly sound to it. The harder-edge present on “Girl of Opportunity” shows an admiration for punk music that really quickens the beat of the track and really gets individuals interested in the music put down to this disc...What distinguishes Emily...is a richness and individuality [in her] voice that never departs." - Neufutur

"Robin Vaughan"

“Emily Grogan, who may well turn out to be the next big thing out of Boston’s music scene…The singer/guitarist is a Botticelli beauty in a pink dress, with a sweet smile and self-effacing social manner, but anyone expecting a set of wan singer-songwriter introspections about boyfriends and rainy days is in for a bracing surprise.” Robyn Vaughn,The Boston Herald
- The Boston Herald

"Keith “Rev.” Harris"

“…well-structured songs with great guitar hooks, catchy lyrics…Much of her strength is harnessed in her distinct and powerful set of pipes, simultaneously aggressive enough to take a bite out of your arm, and the next moment, to be as soothing as a hospital nurse.” - The Northeast Performer

"David Wildman"

“…As a songwriter, Grogan's work is a mix of right-brain creativity and left-brain precision…”
- Boston Globe

"Magnus Sundell"

"[She has] a BIG voice, that shakes you up, shoots big holes in the air, and threatens to swallow everything that comes in it's way. A voice destined to go really far. The whole distance." - Trots Allt (Sweden)
