Bio

The best way to brighten up a room is to place a piano in it along with Emily Kohne. A young singer-songwriter with classical piano training and oodles of musical theatre experience describes Emily, who writes songs that people can’t get out of their heads. She makes them laugh, she makes them cry, and most of all she makes them smile the whole time - just like she does herself! Emily writes catchy folk/pop with a transparency that allows the listener to experience the emotional depth of the song. It’s a nice blend of whimsey, jazz and roots, with that pop sensibility which makes Emily not only a great singer, but a great songwriter too. She can exude deep emotional conviction in her cover tunes as well, as heard in her personalized arrangements of Gavin McGraw’s “Belief” and surprisingly Eminem’s “Lose Yourself”, which earned her a medal of achievement on YouTube.

It wouldn’t be a huge exaggeration to claim that Emily was a child prodigy, because at the age of three she was composing on an electronic keyboard. She started taking her songwriting more seriously after winning Thunder Bay’s High School Idol competition in the original class three years in a row. She stopped entering the competition in grade eleven, and was then asked to be one of the judges for the following year. However, she moved to Vancouver for grade twelve where she continued to enhance her reputation by winning Byrne Idol 2011 at Byrne Creek Secondary High School. She makes that kind of an impact with her music, and so it is that she is honouring her gift by sharing it with the world, embarking on a career of singing and songwriting. In the meantime and throughout the journey, Emily hopes to continue with her love of baking and to travel the world.

Emily has received honours in Festival of the Arts competitions and Royal Conservatory exams in the varied categories of vocals and piano. Born in Manitoba, Emily studied at the Conservatory of Music and Art in Winnipeg until the family moved away from a smaller prairie town to Thunder Bay, Ontario. She was fortunate enough to be taught by the pianist of the Thunder Bay Symphony Orchestra who had never taken a student as young as Emily at age ten - apparently the audition went well! It was in high school when Emily started singing and dancing in school musicals and public performances with her voice coach’s production company. She explores guitar and has learned to accompany herself with it rather convincingly when the mood strikes. Emily has now graduated and is working towards living out her dream as a musician. Her solo concerts as a singer sngwriter are a joy to experience, and her love of performing is as obvious as the smile on her face.
